ENTREPRENEURSHIP — Pre-technical
Subtopic: BUSINESS PLAN
A business plan is a short document that explains your business idea and how it will make money. It helps you think clearly, plan steps, and show others (like parents or SACCOs) that your idea can work. (Kenya context: use Ksh for money, include M-Pesa if you will accept digital payments.)
A simple plan that says what you will sell, who will buy it, how you will sell it, and how much money you expect.
- To know if your idea can make profit.
- To explain your idea to parents, teachers, or lenders.
- To stay organised as the business grows.
Main parts of a simple business plan
- Business name & idea — What you will sell (example: snacks, phone charging, stationery).
- Customers — Who will buy? (students, neighbours, boda boda riders).
- Location & time — Where and when you will sell (near school, weekends).
- Products & prices — List items with Ksh prices.
- Costs — What you pay to start and run (ingredients, rent, transport).
- Income & profit — How much you expect to earn and what remains after costs.
- Marketing — How you will tell people (posters, word-of-mouth, WhatsApp).
- Risks & solutions — Problems you might face and how to solve them.
Step-by-step: Make your mini business plan
- Pick one small, clear idea (e.g., "samosa stand at school gate").
- Write who will buy and why (hungry pupils, cheap and quick).
- List things you need and their costs (cookware, ingredients, packaging).
- Set prices for each item. Make sure price > cost so you get profit.
- Estimate daily sales (realistic). Multiply by price to get income.
- Calculate profit = Income − Costs (show for one day or one week).
- Plan basic marketing and safety (food hygiene, ask permission from school/parents).
Example: "Mama Aisha's Mandazi Stand" 🏪
Short plan: Sell 30 mandazi per day near the church after service. Price Ksh 10 each.
| Item | Ksh |
|---|---|
| Flour, sugar, oil (daily) | 300 |
| Charcoal / gas (daily) | 100 |
| Packaging (paper bags) | 30 |
| Total daily cost | 430 |
Income if 30 mandazi sold at Ksh 10 = 30 × 10 = Ksh 300
(This shows a loss for one day in this example — so either cut cost, raise price to Ksh 20, or sell more.)
- Talk with parents or guardians before starting — you may need permission.
- Use M-Pesa for safe payments when possible and keep records (notes or a notebook).
- Save some profit for future stock (reinvest) and a small emergency fund.
- Always keep food and tools clean. Customers like hygiene.
- Join a school or local group (SACCO) later if you want to grow and need money.
