Community and Service Learning β Life Skills in Education
Subtopic: Responsible Decision Making (Age: 15)
- a) Describe the qualities of responsible decisions in day-to-day life.
- b) Make responsible decisions in day-to-day life.
- c) Appreciate the need for responsible decisions in life.
Responsible decision making means choosing actions that are safe, fair, legal, respectful to others, and positive for your future and your community. It involves thinking ahead about consequences, using values and facts, and sometimes asking others for advice.
- Safe β protects your health and that of others (e.g., avoiding risky substances or unsafe routes).
- Legal β follows the law and school rules.
- Respectful β shows respect for people, property and community values.
- Fair β treats others justly and considers their rights.
- Informed β based on facts and proper information, not rumours.
- Accountable β you accept responsibility for your choices and their outcomes.
- Sustainable β supports long-term good for you, family and environment (e.g., proper waste disposal).
- Identify the problem or choice clearly.
- Gather facts β what do you know? What is the law/school rule? Who is affected?
- List possible options or actions.
- Consider consequences (short- and long-term) for you, family and community.
- Check values β does the choice match honesty, respect and safety?
- Ask for advice if unsure (teacher, parent, community elder).
- Choose the best responsible option and act on it.
- Reflect after β what happened? What would you do differently next time?
- Peer pressure: Deciding whether to join friends who want to skip class. Responsible choice: explain your reasons, stick to school, or suggest a safe alternative.
- Community service: Choosing to help clean a local stream rather than ignore littering β good for health and environment.
- Social media: Thinking before posting β avoid spreading rumours or embarrassing others.
- Money: Deciding how to spend pocket money or contribute to household needs β prioritise essentials and save for school supplies.
- Road safety: Choosing to cross at pedestrian crossings or avoid dangerous shortcuts where matatus/boda bodas pass quickly.
- Role-play scenarios (30β40 minutes): Pupils act out Kenyan situations (peer pressure, family financial choice, social media dilemma). After each role-play, classmates use the decision steps to review the choices.
- Case study discussion: Present a short real-life story (e.g., a 15-year-old offered work that would make them miss school). In groups, learners identify stakeholders, list options and agree on the responsible action.
- Community service project plan: Pupils design a small service activity (e.g., school compound clean-up or tree planting). They must use the decision-making steps to plan responsibilities, safety measures, and evaluate outcomes.
- Decision diary (home task, 1 week): Each learner records one daily decision, notes what facts they used, who they asked, the outcome and what they learned.
- Group debate: "Should teenagers earn money by working during school hours?" β practise weighing pros and cons and listening respectfully.
- Invite a community resource person (chief, teacher, health worker) to speak about consequences of irresponsible choices (e.g., early pregnancy, substance abuse) and legal/community expectations.
- Visual mapping: Draw a βconsequence treeβ on the board for a risky choice vs. responsible choice to show long-term effects.
- Short quizzes: identify responsible vs. irresponsible decisions.
- Rubric for role-plays and project plans: criteria include safety, fairness, legality, consultation and reflection.
- Reflection essays or recorded audio journals on a decision they made during the term.
- Use local materials: newspapers, radio clips or community notices as prompts for discussion.
- Use familiar Kenyan situations so learners connect personally.
- Create a safe classroom where differing opinions are respected.
- Praise responsible choices and constructive reflection, not only βcorrectβ answers.
- Encourage learners to involve parents/guardians in the decision diary to promote family communication.
