APPRECIATION IN CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS

Subject: CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS — Subtopic: ANALYSIS OF CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS
Level: Age 12 (Kenya)

What is appreciation?

Appreciation means looking carefully at a work of art or a sports performance to understand it, enjoy it, and say why we like or do not like it. We notice how it was made, what message it gives, and how it makes us feel.

Why we analyse (why appreciation is important)

  • To understand how artists and athletes use skills and ideas.
  • To recognise good work and effort.
  • To learn how to improve our own art or sports skills.
  • To enjoy and respect culture (e.g., Kenyan music, dance, traditional games).
  • To practise fair and kind comments (sportsmanship and constructive feedback).

What to look for: Creative Arts

Visual Art (painting, drawing)
  • Colour and contrast
  • Lines and shapes
  • Texture and materials (paper, cloth, beads)
  • Theme and message
Music & Dance
  • Rhythm and beat (e.g., Benga, traditional drumming)
  • Melody and singing
  • Movement, timing and expression
  • Use of voice and instruments

What to look for: Sports

  • Skill and technique (e.g., correct running form, ball control)
  • Fitness: speed, strength, endurance
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Rules, tactic and strategy
  • Effort and sportsmanship (fair play, respect for others)

How to analyse (easy steps)

  1. Look carefully: Watch or view the whole performance or artwork without talking.
  2. Describe: Say what you see and hear. Use simple words (colours, sounds, movements).
  3. Identify: Point out 2–3 important things (technique, rhythm, teamwork).
  4. Explain: Say why those things are important and how they affect the work or game.
  5. Judge politely: Give a fair opinion — what was good and one thing to improve.

Kenyan examples you know

  • Music: Benga guitar rhythm in community songs — check the beat and the guitar’s role.
  • Dance: Maasai jumping shows energy and rhythm — notice timing and unison.
  • Sport: School athletics (middle and long distance) — look at running form, pacing and breathing.
  • Traditional games: Bao — observe strategy and thinking skills.

Important words (easy)

Appreciation – understanding and valuing something.
Rhythm – regular beat in music or movement.
Technique – the way a skill is done well.
Sportsmanship – fair and kind behaviour in games.
Theme – main idea or story in art or music.

Class activities (simple & fun)

  1. Watch a short school performance (song, dance or match). Then in groups, write 3 things you liked and 1 thing to improve.
  2. Draw or take a photo of artwork in your community. Label the colours, shapes and feelings it shows.
  3. Keep a sports diary for a week: note effort, teamwork, and one skill you practised each day.
  4. Role-play: one student is a coach giving polite feedback using the sandwich method — praise, tip, praise.

Simple feedback checklist (Use 1–5)

  • Skill/Technique: 1 2 3 4 5
  • Creativity/Originality: 1 2 3 4 5
  • Energy/Effort: 1 2 3 4 5
  • Teamwork/Sportsmanship: 1 2 3 4 5
  • Overall Enjoyment: 1 2 3 4 5

Write one sentence: "What I liked" and one sentence: "One thing to practise."

Well done!
Quick tip: Use kind words when you give feedback. Start with a good point, give one helpful tip, then end with another good point.
Keep practising
Final note:

Appreciation helps you become a better artist and athlete. Look, think, and speak kindly. In Kenya we have many arts and sports traditions — learn from them and share your own ideas.
