Mandarin Chinese — GREETINGS & INTRODUCTIONS (Oral Expression)

Target age: 12 (Kenya) — Focus: grammatical structures, tones & pronunciation relevant to greetings and introductions

Specific learning outcomes
  • a) Recall key grammatical items from short audio greetings (particles, verbs, pronouns).
  • b) Apply correct tones, syllable pronunciation and natural intonation in greeting sentences.
  • c) Recognize that clear articulation (correct tone + consonant/vowel) changes meaning.

Core grammatical items (with examples)

1) Common greetings (structure & notes)

  • 你好 (nǐ hǎo) — "Hello." Structure: pronoun + adjective used as salutation. nǐ = you; hǎo = good.
  • 您好 (nín hǎo) — polite 'you' for elders/teachers: nín (respectful).
  • 早上好 / 上午好 / 下午好 / 晚上好 (zǎoshang hǎo / shàngwǔ hǎo / xiàwǔ hǎo / wǎnshàng hǎo) — "Good morning/forenoon/afternoon/evening." Phrase = time-word + 好.
  • 再见 (zàijiàn) — "Goodbye." Verb + noun construction: see characters; common set phrase.

2) Introducing names: 叫 vs. 是

  • 我叫 + 名字 (wǒ jiào + name) — "I am called ...". 叫 functions like 'be called' (use for names).
  • 我是 + 名词 (wǒ shì + noun) — "I am / I am a ...". 是 is a copula (linking verb) used before nouns (profession, nationality).
  • Examples:
    • 我叫 Juma. (Wǒ jiào Juma.) — "My name is Juma."
    • 我是学生。 (Wǒ shì xuésheng.) — "I am a student."
    • 我是肯尼亚人。 (Wǒ shì Kěnníyǎ rén.) — "I am Kenyan." — nationality uses 是 + [country name] + 人.

3) Yes/No questions: particle 吗 (ma)

  • Statement → add 吗 to make yes/no question: 你是老师。→ 你是老师吗?(Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma?)
  • Structure: [Subject] + [verb/copula] + [complement/noun] + 吗?
  • Pronunciation note: 吗 is neutral in tone; intonation may rise slightly but grammar marker is sufficient.

4) Question-word questions (open questions)

  • 谁 (shéi) = who; 什么 (shénme) = what; 哪里 / 哪儿 (nǎlǐ / nǎr) = where; 几岁 (jǐ suì) = how old (for children).
  • Word order: Question word replaces the answer position. Example: 你叫什么名字?(Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì?) — "What is your name?"

5) Follow-up particle 呢 (ne)

  • Use 呢 to return a question to the other person: 我是学生,你呢?(Wǒ shì xuésheng, nǐ ne?) — "I am a student, and you?"

6) Politeness and address

  • Use 您 (nín) instead of 你 (nǐ) for polite address to teachers or elders.
  • Add 请 (qǐng) for polite requests: 请问 (qǐng wèn) = "Excuse me / May I ask ...?" → polite opener for questions.

Tones & pronunciation (grammatical importance)

Tones: Mandarin has 4 main tones + neutral tone. Changing tone changes word meaning — grammar relies on correct lexical items.

1st (flat) ā
mā (妈) — mother
2nd (rising) á
má (麻) — hemp
3rd (dipping) ǎ
mǎ (马) — horse
4th (falling) à
mà (骂) — scold

Example showing tone importance in greetings: (你) is second tone, would be wrong and could be another word. Always practise tone + consonant/vowel together.

Pronunciation tips (brief): final consonants are light; consonant pairs (e.g., zh/ch/sh vs z/c/s) change meaning. Clear articulation avoids confusion in introductions.

Annotated sample dialogues (grammar labels)

Dialogue A — two classmates meet:

A: 你好!(Nǐ hǎo!) — pronoun + adjective salutation.

B: 你好!你叫什么名字?(Nǐ jiào shénme míngzì?) — verb 叫 used for name + question word 什么.

A: 我叫 Amina。你呢?(Wǒ jiào Amina. Nǐ ne?) — subject + 叫 + name; follow-up particle 呢.

B: 我是学生。很高兴认识你。(Wǒ shì xuésheng. Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ.) — copula 是 + noun; adverb 很 + adjective; verb 认识 + object.

Grammar notes: 很 (hěn) commonly links to adjectives (often not translated as 'very' strongly in simple phrases). 认识 + someone = to know/meet.

Practice tasks (grammar-focused)

  1. Transform statements into yes/no questions by adding 吗:
    • 他是老师。→ __________
    • 你是肯尼亚人。→ __________
  2. Replace the underlined information with a question word:
    • 你叫什么名字? (What word replaces 'Amina'?) — answer: 什么
    • 他是老师。→ 他是______? (Ask 'what' profession?)
  3. Tone identification (listen & mark tone): teacher plays audio; students write the tone number for each syllable of these words: nǐ, hǎo, jiào, wǒ, shì, nín.
  4. Short rewrite: change informal 你 to polite 您 in these sentences and explain why: 你好。你叫什么名字?

Assessment ideas (grammar alignment to outcomes)

  • Listen to a 20–30 sec recorded greeting (audio): write down the particles, pronouns and verbs you hear (tests recall of grammatical items).
  • Read aloud short greetings and introductions; teacher notes tone accuracy and final consonant clarity (apply tones & articulation).
  • Mark whether a change of tone would change meaning — give minimal-pair examples (acknowledge importance of clear articulation).

Quick reference cheat-sheet

Structures:

  • Greeting: 你好 (Nǐ hǎo) / 您好 (Nín hǎo)
  • Name: 我叫 + 名字 (Wǒ jiào + name)
  • Profession/Nationality: 我是 + 名词 (Wǒ shì + noun)
  • Yes/no question: ...吗? (… ma?)
  • Follow-up: 你呢? (Nǐ ne?)

Tip: Practice tones with short syllables (e.g., mā/má/mǎ/mà) before full sentences.

Simple visual: 👋 你好! — Use polite 您 when greeting teachers/elders. 🇨🇳🇰🇪
