  • Basic word order (SVO): Subject + Verb + Object. Example:
    中文: 我 学习 汉语。
    Pīnyīn: Wǒ xuéxí Hànyǔ.
    Eng: I study Chinese.
  • Use of 是 (shì) for identification: Use 是 to link subject and noun (not normally with adjectives alone).
    我是学生。 Wǒ shì xuésheng. — I am a student.
他是老师。 Tā shì lǎoshī. — He is a teacher.
  • Adjectives with 很 (hěn): To describe feelings or characteristics, use 很 before an adjective (in simple statements).

  • Possession: 的 (de) joins possessor and thing.
    我的名字 / 我 的 名字。 Wǒ de míngzì — my name.
  • Questions:
    • A confirm question: add 吗 (ma) at the end: 你是老师吗? Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma? — Are you a teacher?
    • Information questions use question words: 什么 (shénme), 谁 (shéi), 几/多少 (jǐ/duōshǎo): 你叫什么名字?Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? — What is your name?
    • Follow-up/ne: 你呢?Nǐ ne? — And you?
  • Negation: 不 (bù) for habitual/ability, 没 (méi) for past or “do not have.” Example: 我不忙。Wǒ bù máng. — I am not busy.
