CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN SPORTS

A career refers to a profession, occupation, job or trade that someone has done for along period of time. It ranges from those that require a great extent of training and education to those that require less training and willingness to learn. For example; athletes, sport coaches and physical education teacher.

Linkages refer to the forming of a connection between two or more things, institutions or organizations.

Career in games and sports

Careers in games and sport are professions, occupations or jobs in sports related areas.

  1. Elite of professional athletes and sports persons. These are athletes who compete at elite levels in various sports.

  2. Sport coaches. Coaches are involved in guiding, instructing and training sports persons or sports teams.

  3. Teachers, lecturers and games tutor. These are trained teachers involved in teaching physical education and managing student’s sports and recreation programmers in education INSTITUTIONS.

  4. EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGISTS. These are professions who Work with athletes to come up with exercise programs that will enhance their physical fitness levels.

  5. Sports journalists. These are news writers or reporters who covers sports events for various media houses or sports channels

  6. Sports data analysts or statisticians.These are data specialists who use data to predict outcomes and help improve player’s performance.

  7. Umpires or referees. These are officials who keep a game under control and keep track of scoring. They are responsible for enforcing the rules of the specific sport with the goal of making sure the competition is fair

  8. Facility operations managers. These are managers in charge of the day to day operations of a ports facility.

  9. Sports agents. These are legal representatives who help to represent and manage sports players and their coach’s .their work includes recruiting new players, negotiating contracts and employment, signing endorsement deals and sponsorships. They also deal with public relations such as the social media accounts of their clients.

Personal management skills are skills that will enable you have the ability to regulate and control your feelings, thoughts and actions about your money.

Financial discipline is the ability to ensure that your spending and saving habits follow the plans that you have set for yourself.

Personal management skills to be developed

  1. Organization: This skill will help you to plan well. You will be able to plan, prioritize and manage your money well.

  2. Goal setting: This skill will help you decide what you want to achieve with your money and create a plan that will help you achieve your goals.

  3. Time management: this kill will help you prioritize your tasks, set time lines and remain focused. For example, you will not be distracted but set and meet deadlines on saving your money.

  4. Self-motivation: This skill will enable you start and finish tasks you know should be finished.

  5. Accountability: This skill will help you take up responsibility about your thoughts and actions about your money. This will enable you to evaluate yourself, you spending habits and check them against your plan.

  6. Self-awareness: This skill enables you know your strengths and weaknesses in managing your money.

  7. Critical thinking: This skill will help you decide whether the priorities or goals you have set about your money are realistic or not.



Developing financial discipline

You will need to:

  1. Make a list of your priorities

  2. The goals you set should be specific. Start by setting short term goals and slowly move on to long term goals.

Financial services refer to services provided by banks and financial institutions. For example, there are commercial banks and savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOs) which provide financial services. These services include banking, investing and insurance. Majority of commercial banks have junior accounts which offer services to young people to help them manage their money.
