DEMOCRACY
Topic: Political Development and Governance — Subject: Social Studies (Kenya) — Age: 12
What is Democracy?
Democracy is a way of running a country where the people choose their leaders and can take part in decisions that affect them. In a democracy, leaders are chosen in free and fair elections and must follow the law.
Types of Democracy (simple)
- Direct democracy: People vote directly on issues (rare for whole countries).
- Representative democracy: People elect leaders (like MPs and the President) to make decisions for them. This is how Kenya works.
Key Features of Democracy
- Free and fair elections: Everyone eligible can vote and vote counts are honest. (In Kenya IEBC organizes elections.)
- Rule of law: Laws apply to everyone, including leaders.
- Human rights and freedoms: Freedom of speech, assembly, and religion are protected.
- Participation: People take part in decisions — by voting, joining groups, speaking out, or attending public meetings.
- Separation of powers: Power is shared between different parts of government (e.g., the Executive, Parliament, and Judiciary) so no one is too powerful.
- Accountability: Leaders must explain their actions and can be removed if they fail.
How Democracy Works in Kenya (short)
In Kenya, people vote for the President, Members of Parliament (MPs), governors, and county representatives. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) runs elections. The 2010 Constitution made many changes to strengthen democracy in Kenya.
Benefits of Democracy
- Peaceful way to change leaders.
- Better chance for fairness and justice.
- People can speak up and improve their lives.
- Leaders answer to citizens, which can reduce abuse of power.
Challenges to Democracy in Kenya
- Corruption: Some leaders use public money wrongly.
- Tribalism: Voting based only on ethnic groups can divide people.
- Election violence: Disagreements during elections can cause unrest.
- Low civic participation: Not everyone registers or votes.
- Misinformation: False information can confuse voters.
- Poverty and education: Hardship and lack of civic education make it harder for people to take part fully.
What Citizens Can Do (Your role)
- Register to vote and vote wisely during elections.
- Learn about candidates and issues before voting.
- Speak up when leaders do wrong (respectfully and safely).
- Join school clubs or community groups that teach civic skills.
- Obey the law and respect other people’s rights.
- Report corruption to bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) or use community channels.
Role of Leaders in a Democracy
- Serve the people and protect their rights.
- Use public resources honestly and fairly.
- Make laws and policies that help the country develop.
- Listen to citizens and be open about decisions.
Quick Facts (Kenya)
- Kenya gained independence in 1963 and has held many elections since then.
- The multi-party system returned in 1991, allowing many parties to compete.
- The 2010 Constitution strengthened democracy by creating counties and protecting rights.
- Key institutions: IEBC (elections), Judiciary (courts), Parliament, EACC (anti-corruption).
Activity — Classroom or Home
Group activity (20–30 minutes):
- Divide into small groups. Each group picks one civic problem (e.g., littering, lack of water, corruption).
- Discuss how democracy can help solve it (who to talk to, which leaders to ask, what rights to use).
- Make a short poster or presentation and share with the class.
