TOOLS AND PRODUCTION — Production of goods and services

These are short notes for Pre-technical learners (age 12). We use simple language and Kenyan examples.

What is "Production of goods and services"?

Production means making things (goods) or doing work for other people (services). For example:

  • Goods: a wooden bench, a mat, maize flour, a shirt.
  • Services: haircut from a barber, transport by a matatu driver, teaching at school.

Types of tools used in production

Hand tools
Small, used by hand. Examples: hammer, saw, knife, hoe, screwdriver.
Power tools / machines
Use electricity or fuel. Examples: sewing machine, blender, chainsaw.
Measuring & marking tools
Help make things the right size. Examples: tape measure, ruler, marking chalk.

Why are tools important?

  • Make work faster and easier (a hoe digs faster than hands).
  • Help make good quality goods (a straight cut with a saw).
  • Let people produce more to sell or use at home.

Simple steps in production

Idea
(What to make)
Materials
(Wood, cloth, maize)
Tools
(Choose right tools)
Make
(Cut, join, sew)
Sell / Use
(Market or home)

Example: A tailor has an idea for a school uniform (Idea). He buys cloth (Materials), uses a sewing machine and scissors (Tools), sews the uniform (Make), then sells it at the market (Sell).

Kenyan examples of goods and services

  • Goods: maize flour (uji), baskets, wooden chairs, school uniforms, soap.
  • Services: boda-boda rides, matatu transport, barbers, tailoring, teachers and nurses.

Tool safety and care

  • Always wear safety gear if needed: gloves, eye protection, closed shoes.
  • Use the right tool for the job (don't use a hammer as a chisel).
  • Keep tools clean and dry to stop rust. Oil moving parts of machines.
  • Store tools safely after use so no one gets hurt.

Class / Home activity (easy)

  1. List 5 goods and 5 services you see in your village or town.
  2. Pick one good (e.g., basket) and draw the tools needed to make it. Write the steps to make it.
  3. Discuss how you can sell the good locally (market, school fair, roadside).

Quick quiz (answer in one sentence)

  • 1. What is the difference between a good and a service?
  • 2. Name two hand tools used in Kenya.
  • 3. Why should tools be maintained?
  • 4. Give one example of a service that helps people travel in Kenya.

Happy learning! Ask your teacher or parent if you want to try making a small project using safe tools.
