Subtopic: The Holy Trinity (for age 15)
- Explain the meaning of the Holy Trinity.
- Describe how the Holy Trinity works in the life of a Christian.
- State the Christian doctrine that there is one God.
- Value the monotheistic belief in Christianity.
1. What is the Holy Trinity?
The Holy Trinity is the Christian teaching that God exists as three persons β the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit β and yet is one God. This means:
- One God: Christianity is monotheistic (it believes in one God).
- Three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not the same person but share the same divine nature.
- Unity and relationship: The three persons live in perfect unity and love.
Biblical basis (short)
Key passages that support the Trinity idea include:
- Matthew 28:19 β Jesus commands baptism βin the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.β
- John 14:16β17 β Jesus speaks of sending the Holy Spirit, the Helper who will be with believers.
- Romans 8:9 β Paul connects the Spirit with Jesus and Godβs life in believers.
2. How the Trinity works in the life of a Christian
The Trinity is not only a doctrine to learn; Christians experience the three persons in many ways:
- God the Father: Creator and loving parent who cares for people and provides guidance.
- God the Son (Jesus): Saviour and example β through his life, death and resurrection Christians receive forgiveness and a model for living.
- Holy Spirit: Helper and guide who comforts, teaches, gives spiritual gifts and helps Christians live morally.
In church actions β such as worship, baptism, caring for the poor, and conflict resolution β Christians seek the guidance and strength of the Father, the example of Christ and the empowering presence of the Spirit.
3. The doctrine of one God in Christianity
Christianity is monotheistic: it believes in only one God. The Trinity explains how God can be one (one divine being) and at the same time exist in three persons. Important points to remember:
- Unity: There is only one divine essence β God is not divided into three separate gods.
- Differentiation: Father, Son and Holy Spirit are different persons with different roles, but they share the same nature.
4. Why monotheism matters β values and daily life
Valuing the belief in one God affects how Christians live:
- Unity and respect: Belief in one God encourages unity in the church and respect for others made in Godβs image.
- Moral responsibility: Christians are called to live honest and caring lives because they belong to one God who is holy and just.
- Service to community: Churches in Kenya often show the Trinityβs love by helping the needy, promoting peace in families, and supporting education and health β actions that flow from faith.
5. Short class questions & reflection (for revision)
- In your own words, define the Holy Trinity in one sentence.
- Give two Bible verses that show the three persons of God and explain what each verse teaches.
- How can a Kenyan church demonstrate the unity of the Trinity in community projects?
- Why is it important for Christians to believe there is only one God?
6. Key terms (quick)
Trinity, monotheism, person, substance (divine nature), Holy Spirit, incarnation, baptism, unity.
The Holy Trinity teaches that God is one being in three persons β Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This belief preserves Christian monotheism while explaining the personal ways God relates to the world. The Trinity matters for worship, prayer and how Christians serve others, including in Kenyan church life where faith leads to practical care and unity.
Lord Father, through your Son Jesus and by your Holy Spirit, help us to live in unity, love our neighbours and serve our communities. Amen.
