Music — Performing
Subtopic: Songs • For learners age 11 (Kenya)

What is a song?

A song is music with words that tell a story, share feelings or teach something. Songs usually have parts like verses (tell the story) and a chorus (the part everyone remembers and sings together).

Parts of a song

  • Verse: New lyrics each time that move the story along.
  • Chorus: The repeated, easy-to-remember part you sing together.
  • Bridge: A short different section that adds interest.
  • Intro / Outro: The beginning and end of the song.

Songs we sing in Kenya

In Kenya we sing many kinds of songs: traditional folk songs, school and marching songs, praise songs in Swahili or local languages, and popular songs on radio. In class you can perform songs in Swahili, English or your mother tongue.

Practice: Call-and-Response (easy)

Call-and-response helps groups sing together. Teacher or leader sings the call, then everyone answers the response.

Leader: "Twende shuleni, twende pamoja!" 🎶
Group: "Twende pamoja!" (We go together!)
Try it twice. First slowly, then a bit faster. Add clapping on the beat.

Warm-up and performance tips

  • Breathing: Breathe from your belly. Try: breathe in 4 counts, out 4 counts.
  • Vocal warm-up: Hum gently, then sing "do–re–mi" or simple scales up and down.
  • Posture: Stand tall, feet shoulder-width, shoulders relaxed.
  • Projection: Sing to the back of the room by using breath, not shouting.
  • Articulation: Open your mouth for clear words. Practice consonants: "ta-ka-pa".
  • Hydration: Drink water before and after singing. Avoid cold drinks right before performing.

Rhythm: Clapping patterns

Practice these patterns while counting "1 2 3 4" steadily.

Pattern A: Clap on 1 and 3 → Clap — rest — Clap — rest (Clap, rest, Clap, rest)
Pattern B: Clap on every beat → Clap, Clap, Clap, Clap (good for marches)
Pattern C: Syncopation (clap on 1 and the "and" of 2) → Clap, rest, Clap, rest
Try: One person sings the melody while others clap Pattern A.

Simple song you can try (short & original)

This little song is for practice. Use a simple tune and sing slowly at first.

Verse 1
Mt. Kenya in the morning, sun so bright (shalala)
Chorus (sing together)
Twende pamoja, twende pamoja — side by side! 🎵
Verse 2
We learn, we sing, we share a smile (shalala)

Harmony (simple)

Harmony is when some people sing the main melody and others sing a different note that sounds nice with it. Start by having half the group sing the melody and the other half hum the third note below or above quietly.

Before you perform — Checklist

  • Warm-up voice for 5–10 minutes
  • Practice the words and chorus
  • Decide who will be leader and who claps or hums
  • Stand in a line or semi-circle so you see each other's faces
  • Drink water and rest your voice if tired
Have fun singing!
Sing proudly — your voice tells stories for Kenya and the world. 🌍🎶
