Science & Technology β€” Digital Technology

Subtopic: Digital devices (for age 9, Kenya)

What is a digital device?

A digital device is an electronic tool that stores, shows or sends information using tiny on/off switches. These tiny switches make patterns called "bits" (1s and 0s). Examples are phones, tablets and computers. Digital devices help us learn, play and talk to others.

Common devices

  • Mobile phone πŸ“± β€” call, send messages, learn with apps
  • Tablet or iPad β€” read e-books, watch lessons
  • Laptop / Desktop computer πŸ’» β€” type schoolwork, browse safe sites
  • Digital camera πŸ“· β€” take photos for projects
  • Smart TV β€” watch educational shows
  • Calculator β€” do maths quickly

How they work (simple)

Inside a digital device are tiny switches. Each switch is either ON (1) or OFF (0). These 1s and 0s make patterns that tell the device to show pictures, play sounds or save your homework. Devices also need electricity or a battery to work.

Uses of digital devices in school and at home

  • Learning: Watch videos or join online classes.
  • Homework: Type and save essays, maths work and projects.
  • Research: Find facts for science and social studies (ask a teacher to check websites).
  • Communication: Call or message family; share school work with teachers.
  • Creativity: Draw, take photos and make small videos for class.

Safety tips (very important)

  1. Ask a parent or teacher before you go online.
  2. Do not share your full name, home address or phone number with strangers.
  3. Use strong passwords and don’t tell them to friends.
  4. Take breaks: stop after 30–60 minutes and rest your eyes.
  5. If something makes you uncomfortable online, tell an adult right away.

Caring for devices

  • Keep devices dry and away from water (no devices near porridge or soda).
  • Charge in a safe place and don’t leave charging overnight without an adult.
  • Keep screens clean with a soft cloth (no rough cloth or water directly).
  • Store devices in a safe place when not in use (a bag or shelf).

Quick activity β€” Match the device to the use

Draw a line or write the letter on a paper next to each:

A. Mobile phone πŸ“±
1) Take photos for science project
2) Pay for school fees with M-Pesa
3) Watch a long movie (ask first)
B. Calculator
1) Count and check maths answers
2) Browse websites
3) Make videos
C. Tablet
1) Join an online class
2) Cook food
3) Plant trees

Answers: A: 1 and 2, B: 1, C: 1

Short quiz β€” True or False

  1. Digital devices use tiny on/off switches. (True)
  2. You should share your password with friends. (False)
  3. Tablets can help with schoolwork. (True)

Key words (glossary)

Digital: uses numbers (1 and 0) to store information.
Device: a tool or machine we use (phone, computer).
Online: connected to the internet (use with a grown-up).
Battery: the power inside a device that makes it work.

Notes for teachers and parents: Encourage supervised use of devices, limit screen time, and choose safe learning websites. Relate examples to local life (M-Pesa, e-learning materials used in Kenyan schools) so children see how digital devices help them every day.
