Conserving Our Environment β Agriculture
Subtopic: Soil π°πͺ
Soil is the loose top layer of the Earth where plants grow. It is made of tiny pieces of rock, dead plants and animals, air and water. Soil helps us grow maize, tea, vegetables and fruits β food that families in Kenya eat every day. π½ππ
Types of Soil in Kenya (easy to remember)
- Volcanic soil (dark/red): Found in the highlands (e.g., around Nyeri, Kericho). Very good for tea, coffee, vegetables. βπ±
- Sandy soil: Along the coast. Drains fast and warms quickly, good for some vegetables and coconuts. π₯₯
- Clay soil: Sticky when wet, holds water. Found in some lowland areas β good for some crops but needs care. π§±
- Loam: A mix of sand, silt and clay β the best for many crops like maize. π½
Why soil is important
- Soil grows our food β without good soil we cannot get fruits and vegetables. π½οΈ
- Soil holds water that plants need. π§
- Soil is home to tiny animals and helpful worms. π
- Healthy soil helps keep rivers and lakes clean β less mud and dirt wash away. ποΈ
How to care for soil (simple actions kids can learn)
- Plant trees and shrubs: Trees stop soil from blowing away and from washing down the hill. (Plant native trees or fruit trees.) π³
- Use terraces and contour lines: On hills, farmers make flat steps (terraces) or plant along lines that follow the hill. This stops soil from washing away. πͺ
- Mulch the soil: Cover soil with dry leaves, maize stalks or grass to keep moisture and stop erosion. π
- Make compost: Turn kitchen waste and garden leaves into rich food for the soil. Compost adds nutrients and makes soil healthy. β»οΈ
- Rotate crops: Change what you plant each season (e.g., maize then beans). This keeps soil healthy and less tired. πΎβ‘οΈπ«
- Avoid overgrazing: Let grass rest so roots can grow again. This keeps soil covered. π
- Use cover crops: Plant green plants between main crops to protect the soil during the rainy season. πΏ
Easy activities for class or at home
- Jar soil test: Put soil in a clear jar with water, shake and watch layers settle (sand, silt, clay). This shows what soil is made of. π¬
- Make a simple compost bin: Use a small box: add kitchen peelings, leaves and water. Turn it weekly. After a few weeks you get compost. ποΈβ‘οΈπΏ
- Plant a tree or hedgerow: Help plant and care for a tree near school to stop soil erosion. π³
- Soil detective walk: Look for soil types near your school β is it sandy, dark or sticky? Draw a map. πΊοΈ
Safety and good rules
Always wash hands after handling soil. When digging ask an adult for help. Use tools carefully and wear shoes. ππ§€
