What are tools?
Tools are things that help us plant, water, and take care of a garden. They make work easier and faster.
Common tools and what they do
- Hoe (jembe) — used to loosen and remove weeds. Good for making planting furrows.
- Spade / Shovel — for digging holes and moving soil.
- Watering can — to give water to young plants and seedlings.
- Pruning shears (mkasi) — to cut small branches and keep plants healthy.
- Wheelbarrow — carries soil, compost and plants.
- Trowel — a small hand spade for planting seedlings.
- Panga (machete) — used to clear tall grass and branches. For adults only.
How to look after tools
- Clean mud from tools after use. Use water and a brush.
- Dry tools well to stop rust.
- Oil metal parts sometimes (ask an adult how).
- Sharpen blades with help from an adult so they cut well.
- Store tools in a dry place, up and out of reach of small children.
Safety rules (very important)
- Always work with an adult when you use sharp tools.
- Wear closed shoes and gloves to protect your feet and hands.
- Carry tools with the sharp end pointing down.
- Keep tools away from play areas.
- If someone is cutting, stand far away.
Fun activities
- Tool match: Draw lines to match pictures of tools to their names (ask your teacher to print this page).
- Garden helper: Help plant a seed with a trowel and water it with a watering can.
- Tool care day: With a parent, clean and oil one tool and learn how it works.
Quick quiz — check your ideas

- Which tool helps move soil? — Wheelbarrow or spade

Note for teachers and parents: In Kenyan schools, children often learn in the school garden. Always teach children how to use and care for tools safely. Encourage teamwork and respect for equipment.
