Gardening Practices

Subject: Agriculture β€’ For age: 9 (Kenya)

What is a garden?

A garden is a small place where we grow food and plants. In Kenya, children can help grow vegetables and herbs such as sukuma wiki (kale), tomatoes, spinach, onions and dhania (coriander).

Why garden?

  • We get fresh food to eat (healthy!). πŸ₯¬πŸ…
  • We save money because we grow our own vegetables. πŸ’°
  • Gardens help bees and birds. 🐝🐦
  • Gardening is fun and teaches responsibility. 😊

Simple things in the garden

Parts you will see:

  • Soil β€” where plants grow.
  • Seeds or seedlings β€” tiny plants to start.
  • Water β€” plants need water to grow.
  • Sun β€” plants need sunlight. β˜€οΈ
  • Tools β€” small hoe, watering can, spade (ask an adult). πŸͺ΄

How to start a small garden (easy steps)

  1. Choose a place: Sunny spot near your home (at least 4–6 hours of sun).
  2. Prepare the soil: Remove stones and weeds. Mix in compost or manure if you have it.
  3. Plant seeds or seedlings: Follow packet instructions β€” some seeds go deep, some shallow.
  4. Water: Water gently after planting. Water again in the morning or late afternoon.
  5. Look after the plants: Pull weeds, remove dead leaves, and watch for pests.
  6. Harvest: Pick vegetables when they are ready and enjoy!

Watering tips

  • Water in the morning or late afternoon β€” not at noon. β˜€οΈ
  • Don’t flood the plants; a little water is better than too much.
  • Use a watering can or bucket β€” aim water near the roots, not the leaves.

Simple compost (make soil richer)

Compost is made from kitchen scraps (vegetable peels, fruit skins), dry leaves and small amounts of soil. Put them in a hole or a small bin, keep them moist, and turn them now and then. After some weeks they become dark soil that helps plants grow. πŸͺ±

Pests and safe ways to protect plants

  • Look for insects like caterpillars and remove them by hand. πŸ‘‹πŸ›
  • Use soapy water spray (few drops of soap in a litre of water) to wash bugs β€” ask an adult first.
  • Encourage helpful insects (bees and ladybugs) by planting flowers nearby.
  • Always ask an adult before using any spray or chemical.

Plants that grow well in Kenya (good for kids)

Sukuma wiki (kale), spinach, tomatoes, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes and herbs like dhania. Plant during the rainy seasons: long rains (March–May) or short rains (Oct–Dec) for best results.

Garden safety β€” important!

  • Always work with an adult. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§
  • Use small tools made for kids and wear shoes and gloves if needed.
  • Wash your hands after gardening.

Fun activities

  • Plant a row of fast-growing radishes and watch them sprout in a few weeks. 🌱
  • Make a mini herb pot with dhania and basil on a windowsill. 🌿
  • Keep a garden diary with drawings and dates you planted and harvested. ✍️
