Living Better with Wild Animals

Conserving Our Environment — Agriculture (Kenya) • Age: 9

Farmers and wild animals share the land. When we learn to live together, people, animals and crops stay safe. These simple ideas help Kenyan farmers and villages keep crops and animals safe — without hurting wildlife.

Why we should care

  • Wild animals like elephants, monkeys, hippos and birds are important for nature. 🐘🐒🦆
  • Good ways of living together protect crops and keep animals alive.
  • Healthy wildlife helps our future — tourists, food, water and clean land.

Smart farming ideas that help

Beehive fences 🐝

Hang beehives along the edge of farms. Elephants hate bees and stay away. Bees also make honey for the family.

Chili and smoke fences 🌶️

Use chilli plants or chilli mixed with oil on ropes. The strong smell keeps animals like elephants and monkeys away, safely.

Strong bomas for livestock 🐐

At night keep cows, goats and sheep in strong enclosures (bomas). Use thorny branches or good fencing to stop predators like hyenas.

Plant buffer crops 🌿

Plant maize or sorghum behind stronger crops or use crops animals dislike at the edge of fields to protect the main farm.

Watch and talk together 👀

Make a village team to watch fields at harvest time and share news about animal movement (radio or phone).

Use lights and noise carefully 🔦

At harvest, lights and noise can scare animals away. Use this only safely — not to hurt animals.

Safe things NOT to do

  • Never poison or hurt wildlife — this kills other animals and people and is against the law.
  • Do not feed wild animals — feeding can make them lose fear of people.
  • Do not leave livestock or crops unattended where big animals often pass.

What if you meet a wild animal?

  • Stay calm. Back away slowly. Do not run. 🧍‍♂️➡️
  • Give the animal space to leave.
  • If it is dangerous (like a hippo, elephant or large carnivore), go to a safe place and tell an adult immediately.

How schools and children can help

  • Make posters: “Protect wildlife, protect our farms.” 🎨
  • Plant bee-friendly flowers or trees at school to support beehive fences.
  • Visit a community conservancy or invite a ranger to talk about wildlife.
Did you know?

In Kenya, community conservancies help protect animals and help farmers find ways to keep crops safe. Working together helps people and wildlife live better.

Quick words (glossary)

  • Conservancy — Land where people protect wildlife and nature together.
  • Boma — A safe enclosure for livestock at night.
  • Co-exist — To live together peacefully.

Activity for you (fun!)

  1. Draw a colourful farm showing a beehive fence and a safe boma.
  2. Talk with your family: which idea will help your farm most?
  3. Share your drawing at school and explain one way to keep animals safe.
