Legumes 🌱

These are plants that give us food and help the soil. They are fun and easy to grow in Kenyan gardens!

What are legumes?

Legumes are plants that make beans or peas in pods. They have tiny helpers on their roots that put a special plant food called nitrogen into the soil. That helps other plants grow better.

Examples you know in Kenya

  • Common beans (maharagwe) β€” the kitchen bean
  • Peas β€” sweet garden peas
  • Groundnuts / peanuts (karanga)
  • Cowpeas (kunde)
  • Pigeon peas (mbaazi)
  • Soybeans

Why legumes are good

  • They give us protein β€” good to eat.
  • They help the soil by adding nitrogen. (This helps the next plant grow.)
  • They can be used as food, animal feed and to make the soil healthy.

How to grow legumes β€” easy steps

  1. Pick the right time: Plant at the start of the rains β€” long rains (March–May) or short rains (Oct–Dec).
  2. Sun and soil: Choose a sunny place with loose soil. Good soil drains water so roots don’t rot.
  3. Plant seeds: Put small seeds about 3–5 cm apart. Leave rows about 30–50 cm apart.
  4. Water: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water in the morning (β˜€οΈπŸ’§).
  5. Support: Climbing beans need sticks or a trellis to climb.
  6. Weed and mulch: Remove weeds and add dry leaves around plants to keep soil cool and wet.
  7. Harvest: Pick pods when they are full. For dry beans, wait until pods are brown and dry.

Common problems and gentle fixes

  • Aphids or small bugs β€” pick them off or spray water with a little soap (ask an adult).
  • Too much water β€” make sure soil drains well so roots stay healthy.
  • Beans left in the sun β€” harvest early in the morning to avoid heat damage.
  • Store seeds dry in a cool place to stop pests.

Fun class activity: Grow a bean in a jar

You need: a clear jar, paper towel or cotton wool, some water, and a bean seed.

  1. Wet the paper towel (not dripping). Put it inside the jar on the side.
  2. Place the bean seed between the glass and the paper towel so you can watch it sprout.
  3. Put jar where it gets light but not too hot. Keep the towel damp.
  4. Watch every day β€” first the root (down) then the shoot (up). Draw what you see in a notebook.
See the root go down and the green leaves go up. Measure growth with a ruler each day!

Harvesting and using legumes

  • Beans for fresh eating: pick pods when full and green.
  • For dry beans: wait until pods are dry and brown, then shell and store.
  • Eat them boiled, stewed, or mix with vegetables β€” very healthy!

Safety and chores

  • Wash hands after gardening.
  • Always ask an adult for help when using tools or spraying water/soap.
  • Share chores: water, weed, and watch β€” gardening is teamwork!

Happy gardening! Plant a legume and watch your garden and soil get stronger. 🌿🌞
