Grade 6 Science And Technology Environment – Water Conservation Notes
Water Conservation
Environment — Science and Technology (Age 11, Kenya)
Water is life. It keeps our plants, animals and people healthy. But water is limited in many places in Kenya. Learning how to save water helps you, your family and your community.
Why conserve water?
- Some places in Kenya are dry and get little rain.
- Saving water reduces the work of walking long distances to fetch water.
- Plants and animals depend on the water we protect.
- Using less water saves money and helps the environment.
What causes water shortage?
- Little or unreliable rainfall (drought).
- Leaky taps and broken pipes that waste water.
- Using too much water for farms, gardens and homes.
- Pollution of rivers and wells that makes water unsafe.
How you can save water — at home and school
- Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or soaping hands.
- Fix leaks: a dripping tap can waste lots of water over time.
- Use a basin when washing dishes or vegetables; reuse the rinse water for plants.
- Shorter showers and use a jerrycan or bucket if there is no shower meter.
- Water plants in the morning or evening when it is cooler so less water evaporates.
- Mulch garden soil with dry grass or leaves to keep soil moist longer.
- Harvest rainwater: catch roof water in a drum for home or school use.
Simple rainwater-harvesting (roof catchment)
A basic system: roof → gutter → filter (cloth/leaf trap) → storage drum (tanker) → use.
Tip: cover the drum to stop mosquitoes and keep water clean.
Class experiment: Measure water used to wash hands
- Get a small bucket (5 L) and a stopwatch or phone timer.
- Turn on tap like you normally do and catch all water used in the bucket while someone pretends to wash hands.
- Stop the tap and measure the water in litres. Record time and litres.
- Try again but turn the tap off while soaping. Compare litres used — you will use less!
What you learn: small changes reduce water use a lot.
Actions for your school and community
- Start a rainwater drum at school for gardening and cleaning.
- Fix school taps and report leaks quickly.
- Teach others why saving water matters — make posters or a short drama.
- Plant trees to help the soil hold water and reduce erosion.
Key words
Conserve: to save and use carefully.
Harvest: collect and store (like rainwater).
Greywater: slightly used water from baths and washing (can be reused for gardens if safe).
Drought: long time with little or no rain.
Quick quiz (try before peeking at answers)
- Name two ways you can save water when washing dishes.
- Why is it better to water plants in the morning?
- What is one benefit of collecting rainwater in a drum?
Answers
- Use a basin, reuse rinse water; avoid running tap while soaping.
- Cooler temperatures mean less evaporation so more water reaches roots.
- It gives water during dry days, reduces use of treated water and can save money/time.
