Grade 4 Art And Craft Indigeneous Kenyan Craft – Traditional Twine Technique Notes
Traditional Twine Technique
Indigenous Kenyan Craft — for 9 year olds
What is twine?
Twine is strong string made by twisting plant fibres together. In Kenya people use twine for baskets, mats, fishing nets and small ropes. Twine can be made from sisal, coconut fiber (coir), banana fibre, papyrus and long grasses.
Materials (easy to find in Kenya)
- Sisal strands or banana leaf strips
- Coconut fibre (coir) or long grasses
- Small comb or your fingers (to smooth fibres)
- Scissors (ask an adult for help)
- A bowl of water (to moisten fibres lightly)
Tools you will use
Your hands are the most important tool! Use a small comb to tidy fibres. Ask an adult to help with scissors.
Simple Two-Strand Twine — Step by Step
- Gather two equal small bunches of fibre. Keep them tidy and straight.
- Hold one bunch in each hand. Leave a short tail to tie later.
- Twist each bunch in the same direction (for example, twist both clockwise).
- Now, cross the two twisted bunches over each other in the opposite direction (if you twisted clockwise, cross them counter-clockwise). This makes a strong twine!
- Keep twisting and crossing until you reach the end. Tie a knot to finish.
Quick picture idea:
Step: twist each -> AAA BBB
Then cross them -> A/A\A/B\B/B
Result (twine) -> AAAAAA-BBBBBB (joined)
Then cross them -> A/A\A/B\B/B
Result (twine) -> AAAAAA-BBBBBB (joined)

Fun activities (try with an adult)
- Make a friendship braid — small twine cords tied together.
- Weave a tiny coaster by coiling your twine in a circle and sewing it with more twine.
- Decorate a jar or bottle by wrapping twine around it for a colourful look.
Care and Safety
- Always ask an adult to help with scissors or sharp tools.
- Moisten fibres a little with water to make them easier to twist.
- Keep your hands clean and dry after working with fibres.
