Music: Performing β€” Songs

Age: 8 β€’ Kenya πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ
These are short, easy notes to help you learn about songs and how to perform them in class, at assemblies or at celebrations.

What is a song?

A song is music with words that we sing. Songs often tell a story, teach a lesson, or help us celebrate. In Kenya we sing in Swahili, English and many other languages.

Parts of a song (simple)

  • Verse: Tells the story (different words each time)
  • Chorus: The part we repeat β€” easy to sing together
  • Bridge: A short different part (not always needed)

How to sing well (easy tips)

  • Stand or sit straight β€” good posture helps your voice. 🎡
  • Breathe from your belly β€” take a deep breath before a line. 🌬️
  • Sing loud and soft: practice saying the same line quietly and then loudly. πŸ”ŠπŸ”‰
  • High and low notes: stretch your voice gently; don’t shout. πŸ“ˆπŸ“‰
  • Listen to others and sing together β€” match their pitch and rhythm. πŸ‘‚πŸ‘«

Kenyan songs you can try (simple)

These are good for school and fun events. Sing with clapping or small actions.

  • Jambo Bwana (Swahili tourist song) β€” easy chorus: "Jambo! Jambo! Hakuna matata" 🎢 (means "Hello! No worries")
  • Kenyan school singing games β€” short rounds, call-and-response lines that children sing together.
  • National and school songs β€” we sing the National Anthem at assemblies (stand straight and sing respectfully).

Instruments and actions

Use simple instruments: drums (ngoma), shakers, clapping, stomping feet. Actions make songs fun and help others keep the beat.

Clap & Keep Beat
πŸ‘£
Stomp with Rhythm

Fun class activities

  1. Call-and-response: Teacher sings a line, class answers.
  2. Clap the beat: Clap on each strong beat (1-2-3-4).
  3. Make a chorus: Choose words all can remember and sing three times.
  4. Simple actions: Add hand movements to the chorus to help memory.

Performance tips for school

  • Practice the chorus many times β€” it helps everyone join in.
  • Stand together, look at the teacher for the start, then smile. πŸ™‚
  • At the end, bow or wave and listen for applause β€” clap back politely. πŸ‘
  • Be proud of trying β€” everyone makes mistakes while learning! 🌟

Quick 2-minute warm-up

1) Breathe in 3 seconds, out 3 seconds (repeat 3 times).
2) Hum "do-re-mi" slowly (high then low).
3) Sing the chorus once quietly, once loudly.

Short quiz for the class:
