What is Weather?

Weather is what the sky and air are like today. It tells us if it is sunny, rainy, windy, or cloudy. Weather can change from morning to evening.

Why weather matters in Kenya

  • Farmers need rain to grow maize, tea and vegetables.
  • Hot weather means we wear light clothes and drink more water.
  • Heavy rains can cause floods — we must stay safe.
  • Different places in Kenya have different weather: Mombasa is warm and humid, Nairobi is cooler, and high places like Mount Kenya are very cold.

Seasons in Kenya (easy)

- Long rains (Masika): around March to May.
- Short rains (Vuli): around October to December.
- Some months are dry and hot (often June–August or December–February in many areas).

Weather words (Vocabulary)

Sun (Jua), Rain (Mvua), Cloud (Wingu), Wind (Upepo), Hot (Moto), Cold (Baridi), Storm (Dhoruba)

Fun, safe activities to learn about weather

  1. Make a rain gauge:
    - Use a clean plastic bottle, cut off the top and flip it as a funnel.
    - Put a ruler inside, mark centimetres, leave outside when it rains.
    - Measure how much rain fell.
  2. Make a wind catcher:
    - Cut paper strips and tape them to a stick.
    - Hold outside to see which way the wind blows.
  3. Observe the sky:
    - Every morning, draw the sky: sun, clouds, rain.
    - Keep a week diary: Was it sunny or rainy? This helps you learn patterns.

Safety tips

  • Stay away from flooded rivers and roads during heavy rain.
  • Do not play under lightning or in open fields during a storm.
  • Wear a hat and drink water when it is very hot.
