Safe Travel

Social Environment โ€” Environmental Activities (For age 8, Kenya)

These are easy rules and activities to help you travel safely and care for our environment. Think about travelling to school, to the market, or to visit family. Use the tips below and do the fun activities at the end!

Before you travel
  • Tell a trusted adult where you are going and the time you will be back. ๐Ÿ“ฃ
  • Bring a reusable water bottle and wear bright clothes so drivers can see you. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘•
  • Know a safe route: use pavements/footpaths or a zebra crossing. Draw your route with an adult. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ
  • Have a phone number of a parent or guardian saved or written down. โ˜Ž๏ธ
On the road โ€” stay safe
  • Use zebra crossings and wait for vehicles to stop before you cross. Look left, right, then left again. ๐Ÿฆ“๐Ÿ‘€
  • When walking to school, go with a friend or adult. Adults can watch the road for you. ๐Ÿค
  • Matatu and bus safety: stand back from the road when waiting at the stage, sit down quickly and hold the handle. ๐ŸšŒ (matatu)
  • Boda boda: only use a boda boda with a helmet and an adult driver, and always sit properly. ๐Ÿ›ต๐Ÿšซ if no helmet
  • If you cycle, wear a helmet and ride on the side of the road or path, not in the middle. ๐Ÿšฒ
  • Never get into a strangerโ€™s car or go with someone you donโ€™t know. If you feel unsafe, find a shop, teacher, or uniformed person. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿš—
Protect the environment while travelling
  • Carry a small bag for litter (takataka). Put your rubbish in a bin when you find one. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ
  • Use a reusable water bottle and lunch box โ€” this reduces plastic waste. โ™ป๏ธ
  • Walk or cycle when you can โ€” it is healthy and helps keep the air clean. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšฒ
  • Do not pick flowers or break branches from trees โ€” plants and animals need them. ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒผ
  • Do not feed wild animals โ€” they find their own food and feeding them can be harmful. ๐Ÿ’โŒ
If something goes wrong
  • Find a safe adult (teacher, parent, shopkeeper, police officer) and tell them. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ
  • Call your parent or guardian. If it is an emergency, call Kenyaโ€™s emergency numbers: 999 or 112. ๐Ÿ“ž
  • Stay where there are people and avoid dark or quiet places. ๐Ÿช
  • If you are lost, stay where you are and ask an adult in uniform or a shopkeeper for help. ๐Ÿงญ
Fun activities (do with an adult)
  1. Draw a safe map from home to school. Mark zebra crossings, matatu stages and safe adults. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ
  2. Make a small clean-up team: pick up rubbish along your route and put it in a bin. Take photos before and after. ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ
  3. Role-play: practice crossing the road and asking a stranger for help with a teacher or parent. ๐ŸŽญ
  4. Create a "Green Travel" poster to put in your classroom: remind others to walk, cycle, and pick up litter. ๐Ÿ“„๐ŸŒฟ
