Grade 3 Environmental Activities Social Environment – Environmental and Cultural Events in the Community Notes
Environmental and Cultural Events in the Community
Topic: Social Environment • Subject: Environmental Activities
For: Children aged 8 (Kenya)
What are these events?
These are special days when people in the town or village come together. Some events celebrate our culture and traditions. Some help the environment, like planting trees or cleaning beaches. Sometimes both happen at the same time!
Examples you may see in Kenya
- Tree planting day with schools and families (look out for World Environment Day activities).
- Community clean-up (Harambee clean-up) in towns or near rivers.
- Beach clean-up in places like Mombasa or Diani.
- Cultural festivals with dances, songs, craft stalls — stories about our people and land.
- Market days or harvest festivals where people celebrate food and farming.
🌳
Why these events are good: they help nature, teach us to care for the environment and keep culture alive. They are fun and you meet friends and neighbours.
How children can join (easy steps)
- Ask an adult to join a tree planting or clean-up day.
- Bring a small garden tool or rubbish bag (ask a teacher or parent first).
- Wear a hat, closed shoes and sunscreen — stay safe in the sun.
- Help with songs, dances or telling a story at a cultural event.
- Make art from safe recycled items to show at the event.
Good things to do at events
- Use a reusable water bottle instead of a plastic cup 💧
- Collect rubbish and sort things to recycle ♻️
- Plant native trees or flowers that help birds and bees 🐝
- Listen and learn from elders about songs, food and stories
- Make signs that say “Keep Our Village Clean” or “Save Trees”
Mini activity you can try:
Draw a poster for a clean-up day. Use only paper and old magazines for decoration. Bring your poster to your next school or village event!
Safety tips
- Always go with an adult.
- Wear gloves if you touch rubbish.
- Do not pick up sharp things — tell an adult.
- Drink water and rest when you are hot.
Short quiz (ask a parent or teacher)
- Name one place in Kenya where people might do a beach clean-up.
- Why is planting trees good for the community?
- List two things you can do at a cultural event to help the environment.
Remember: Helping the environment and celebrating our culture can happen together. When we care for the land and learn our songs and stories, our community grows strong. — Happy Harambee! 🎉
