Grade 3 Environmental Activities Environment And Its Resources – Water Notes
Environmental Activities
Topic: Environment and Its Resources — Subtopic: Water
What is water? 💧
Water is a clear liquid we need every day. We drink it, cook with it, water our crops and give it to animals.
Without water, people, animals and plants cannot live.
Where do we find water in Kenya? 🌍
- Rivers: Tana, Athi, Mara and others.
- Lakes: Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana.
- Rain — the most important source for farmers.
- Wells, boreholes and springs in many villages.
- The Indian Ocean at the coast (salt water, not for drinking).
How we use water
- Drinking and cooking.
- Washing hands and keeping clean.
- Watering crops and gardens.
- Giving to animals and farms.
- Making electricity (hydropower).
Simple Water Cycle ☁️➡️💧
1. Sun heats lakes and rivers → water evaporates into the air.
2. Water forms clouds in the sky.
3. Clouds bring rain to the land.
4. Rain fills rivers, lakes and the ground again.

How to save water at home and school (easy tips!) 💡
- Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.
- Use a basin to wash plates and reuse that water to water plants.
- Fix leaking taps or tell an adult to fix them.
- Collect rainwater in jerrycans or tanks to use for gardens.
- Plant trees — they help rain fall and keep the soil wet.
Keep our water clean — do not pollute! 🚫🗑️
- Put rubbish in the bin — do not throw plastic or oil into rivers or lakes.
- Use soap in a place that does not run into streams.
- Help clean your local river or school compound with friends and adults.

Safe water for drinking ✅
If water is from a river or tap and you are not sure it is clean, ask an adult to:
- Boil the water for one minute before drinking.
- Use water purification tablets or chlorine drops if available.
- Try SODIS: clear plastic bottles in the sun for a day (asks an adult first).
Fun environmental activities (for you and your class) 🎒
- Make a rain gauge: mark a jar to measure rain each week.
- Keep a one-week water diary: write how much water you used each day.
- Plant a tree or a vegetable garden and water it with collected rainwater.
- Visit a nearby river (with adults) and clean rubbish — take photos and make a poster.
Quick quiz (ask a friend or teacher) ✍️
- Why is water important? (one short sentence)
- Name two places we find water in Kenya.
- Write one way you can save water at home.
Remember: Save water, keep it clean and always ask an adult if you are unsure. Together we protect Kenya's water!
