What is "Harmonious Living"?

Harmonious living means people in the community live happily and help each other. It means respect, sharing, working together and keeping the place clean and safe. In Kenya we greet one another, help in harambee, and care for our environment.

Why it is important

  • We stay healthy when our environment is clean.
  • Neighbours feel happy when people are kind and helpful.
  • Working together (harambee) makes big jobs small.
🌳
Example in Kenya: Planting trees during a community harambee to stop soil erosion and give shade.

Good actions (Environmental Activities)

  • Clean the compound and street (pick up litter). 🧹
  • Plant trees and flowers near your home. 🌱
  • Use bins: separate plastics, paper and food waste for recycling. ♻️
  • Save water: turn off taps, fix leaks. 💧
  • Use solar light when possible to save energy. ☀️

Steps to plant a tree (easy)

  1. Choose a safe place with enough sun.
  2. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball. 🕳️
  3. Place the tree, cover with soil and press gently.
  4. Water the tree every few days until it grows.

How to be a good neighbour

  • Greet elders: say "Shikamoo" and they reply "Marahaba". 🙏
  • Share food or help carry water if someone needs help. 💧
  • Join community clean-ups and harambees. Everyone helps — children too!
  • Be kind: say "Asante" for thanks and "Samahani" to say sorry.

If there is a problem

Talk calmly with the person. If you cannot solve it, ask a teacher, elder, or the chief for help. Always try to be fair and forgive.

Fun activity — "My Clean Community" (10 minutes)
  1. Draw a picture of your home and neighbours.
  2. Circle things that keep the place clean (trees, bins, taps). ✅
  3. Write one promise: "I will help by..." (e.g., sweeping the compound).

Safety tips

  • Use gloves and ask an adult before picking up sharp or strange things. 🧤
  • Do not play near busy roads or deep water without an adult. 🚸
  • Wash your hands after cleaning or planting. 🧼
Short chant for children

"Sweep and plant, save the land — together we lend a helping hand!" 🌍👏

Remember: Harmonious living makes our community strong, healthy and beautiful. Join your neighbours, respect elders and care for our environment.
