What "Keeping safe in the community" means

It means knowing how to stay safe when you are at the market, on the road, at a playfield, near rivers, or at home. It also means helping to keep our environment clean and safe for everyone.

Important safety rules

  • Road safety: Always use the zebra crossing. Look left, right, then left again before crossing the road. Hold an adult's hand near busy roads and matatu stops. 🚸
  • Water safety: Only swim where there is a lifeguard or an adult who can swim. Never swim alone. Do not play near deep wells, rivers, or in flooded areas. 🌊
  • Stranger safety: Do not go anywhere with someone you do not know. Say “No” and go find a trusted adult (teacher, parent, police, chief). 🚫🧑‍✈️
  • Avoid hazards: Do not play near rubbish dumps, broken glass, open manholes or construction sites. These can hurt you. 🗑️⚠️
  • Animals: Keep away from unknown or stray dogs and animals. Tell an adult if an animal looks sick or aggressive. 🐕
  • Fire safety: Don’t play with matches, lighters, or electric plugs. Tell an adult if you smell smoke. 🔥
  • Help the environment safely: When you pick up litter, wear gloves and closed shoes. Use a stick to pick sharp objects and ask an adult for help. ♻️

Emergency numbers and who to call

Memorise these and practice with your family:

  • Emergency: 999 or 112 (these connect to police, ambulance and fire). ☎️
  • Your parent or guardian’s phone — always keep it written somewhere safe. 🧾
  • School contacts: teacher’s phone and nearest police station number. 🏫👮

What to do if you are in danger

  • Stay calm and call an adult or emergency number.
  • Move to a safe place — away from traffic, water, or fire.
  • If someone is hurt, tell an adult right away. For small cuts, wash with clean water and cover with a clean cloth or bandage. 🩹
  • If you are lost, stay where you are if it is safe and shout for help. Find a shop, teacher, or police officer to help you. 🗣️

Help your community stay safe

  • Join clean-up days with gloves and boots. Pick up litter and plant trees to stop soil erosion. 🌱
  • Tell adults about broken street lights, open drains or potholes that can hurt people. 🛠️
  • Make a map of safe places: home, school, nearest police station and clinic. Keep the map with your school book. 🗺️
  • Role-play safety actions with friends and family so you know what to do in a real situation. 🎭

Quick activities

  1. Draw your home street and mark safe places and danger spots.
  2. Practice crossing a pretend road with a friend. Remember: stop, look, listen, and walk. 🚦
  3. Learn the emergency numbers and practise how to say your home address and parent’s phone number. 📱
Stay safe, help protect the environment, and always tell a trusted adult if something worries you. 🌍❤️
