Grade 3 Environmental Activities Care for the environment β Caring for Energy Notes
Caring for Energy
Topic: Care for the environment β Subject: Environmental Activities (For learners aged 8, Kenya)
What is energy? πβοΈ
Energy is what makes things work. It helps us:
- Light our homes (bulbs)
- Cook our food (jiko, stove)
- Run radios and TVs
- Charge phones and run motors
Energy comes from the sun (solar), fuel (charcoal, LPG), electricity and wood.
Why care for energy? π
- Save money for your family (less electricity or charcoal used).
- Keep the air clean β less smoke from burning wood or charcoal.
- Protect trees and wildlife β fewer trees cut for firewood.
- Help Kenya use clean energy like sunshine (solar).
Energy at home β simple things you can do β
- Switch off lights and fans when leaving a room. π‘β‘οΈβ
- Open curtains in the day to use sunlight for light. βοΈπͺ
- Use a small hotplate or an efficient jiko when cooking to use less fuel. π²π₯
- Unplug phone chargers and appliances when not in use β they still use energy if plugged in. πβοΈ
- Wash clothes in a full load and dry them in the sun when possible. π§ΊβοΈ
- Use LED or energy-saving bulbs if your family can get them β they save a lot of electricity. π‘β
At school β be an energy hero π¦ΈββοΈπ¦ΈββοΈ
- Make sure lights are off when not needed in classrooms.
- Use the chalkboard instead of many printed pages to save energy used in making paper.
- Help your school plant trees β they give shade so rooms stay cool without fans. π³
Fun energy activities for kids π¨π
- Energy Detective: Walk around home for 10 minutes with a grown-up and list things using energy. Mark which can be turned off.
- Sunlight drawing: Sit near a window and draw with natural light β count how many minutes you didnβt need a light bulb.
- Plant & Shade: Plant a small tree or tall plant near the house β it will help keep the house cooler.
Easy visual: Switch it off! π

Tip: Always move to OFF when nobody is in the room!
Energy saving challenge for the week π
Try to switch off 5 things each day before going to bed (lights, TV, phone charger, radio, fan). For 7 days β how many things did you save in total? Ask a parent to help count.
Reward idea: If you meet the challenge, your family can save money to buy seeds and plant flowers or vegetables! π±
Short quiz β check what you know! βοΈ
