GRADE 9 CRE THE CHURCH – THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Notes
THE CHURCH: THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
CRE notes for Form 2 / Age 14 — Kenyan context
What is the "Gift of the Holy Spirit"?
The Gift of the Holy Spirit refers to the special help God gives to Christians through the Holy Spirit. These gifts help believers serve God and others, build the Church and show God's love in action.
Biblical basis (read or remember):
- Acts 2:1–4 — Pentecost: The Holy Spirit comes with wind and fire (the Church begins).
- 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 — Different spiritual gifts, same Spirit.
- Romans 12:6–8 — Use gifts to serve others.
- Galatians 5:22–23 — Fruits of the Spirit (kindness, patience, love).
Some common spiritual gifts and what they mean:
- Teaching: Explaining the Bible simply — e.g., Sunday school teacher who helps children understand Scripture.
- Leadership/Administration: Organising church activities — e.g., youth leader planning a community clean-up.
- Helps/Service: Serving quietly — e.g., visiting the sick or helping elders.
- Healing: Praying for sick people and trusting God — often combined with medical care.
- Prophecy: Speaking God’s message to encourage or warn the Church (not only predicting the future).
- Wisdom and Discernment: Knowing what is right and helping make good decisions in the church.
- Speaking in tongues / Interpretation: special forms of prayer and understanding used in some churches.
Note: Different churches list gifts slightly differently. What matters is using them to serve others.
Gifts of the Spirit
Given to help people serve the Church (e.g., teaching, leadership).
Fruits of the Spirit
Qualities the Spirit grows in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
How do people receive these gifts?
- By the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and in the life of believers (Acts 2).
- Through prayer, prayer with the church, and the laying on of hands (many churches practice confirmation or blessing).
- By serving often — gifts grow as you use them.
Why use your gift?
- To build up the Church and help people know Jesus.
- To serve your community — for example, organising a church health day or tutoring younger students.
- To show love and unity among Christians.
How can you discover your gift? (Simple steps)
- Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you.
- Try different roles in the church (youth group, choir, outreach).
- Ask your pastor or youth leader for feedback.
- Notice what activities bring joy and where others depend on you.
Classroom / Group activities (for the teacher):
- Role play: Act out a church team using different gifts to plan a community project.
- Gift-mapping: Students write down what they enjoy and where they serve; teacher helps match gifts.
- Community project: Plan a one-day outreach (clean-up, visit an elderly home) to practise serving gifts.
Reflection questions (write short answers):
- Which gift do you think God gave you? Why?
- How can you use your gift to help your church or school this term?
- How are the fruits of the Spirit visible when gifts are used well?
Memory verse:
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all." — 1 Corinthians 12:7
Short prayer (for students):
Holy Spirit, help me to know the gift you have given me. Teach me to use it with love to serve others and grow the Church in Kenya. Amen. 🙏
