Key events in Jerusalem
- Triumphal entry: People welcomed Jesus as a king, waving palm branches and shouting "Hosanna". This fulfilled prophecy (Zechariah 9:9).
- Cleansing of the Temple: Jesus drove out merchants and money-changers, saying the temple should be a house of prayer, not a market (Matthew 21:12–13).
- Teachings and parables: In Jerusalem Jesus taught about the kingdom of God, love, humility and warned against hypocrisy (e.g., Parable of the Tenants).
- Conflict with religious leaders: Pharisees and priests challenged Jesus’ authority and eventually plotted to arrest Him.
- Last Supper: Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples, instituted the Lord’s Supper and washed their feet (Luke 22).
- Arrest, trial and crucifixion: Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, tried, sentenced, and crucified at Golgotha.
- Resurrection: On the third day Jesus rose, proving victory over sin and death (Luke 24).
Important teachings in Jerusalem
Jesus used the time in Jerusalem to teach practical and kingdom values:
- Love God and neighbour: The greatest commandment is love (Matthew 22:37–39).
- Humility and service: Leaders in God's kingdom must serve others (John 13:1–17).
- True worship: God wants genuine prayer and not empty rituals (Mark 11:17).
- Justice and mercy: Jesus stood against unfair practices even in the temple — a call for fairness today.
Why this matters (Significance)
- Shows Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills prophecy.
- Reveals His authority over religious systems and His focus on justice and worship.
- The Last Supper and resurrection form the heart of Christian faith — sacrifice, forgiveness, new life.
- Gives Christians an example to follow: love, service, boldness for justice and wholehearted worship.
Applying the lessons in Kenya
- Like Jesus clearing the temple, stand against corruption and unfairness — in school, keluarga, or community.
- Practice service: help in community projects (Harambee), care for the elderly and orphans as Jesus served others.
- True worship: attend church and pray sincerely, not just out of habit.
- Show forgiveness and reconciliation after disagreements—this promotes unity in families and schools.
Memory verse & short prayer
Memory verse: "He is not here; he has risen!" — Luke 24:6 (NLT or any Kenyan Bible version).
Short prayer: Lord, help me to worship you with a true heart, to serve others, and to stand for what is right. Amen.
Glossary (simple)
- Messiah: The promised Saviour (Christ).
- Temple: The place of Jewish worship in Jerusalem.
- Cleansing: Jesus removing wrongdoing in the temple area.
- Resurrection: Jesus rising from the dead.
Short quiz (for class)
- What happened on Palm Sunday? (1–2 sentences)
- Why did Jesus drive out the money-changers from the temple?
- Name two lessons we learn from Jesus’ time in Jerusalem and explain one with a Kenyan example.
Answers (short):
- Palm Sunday: Jesus entered Jerusalem and people welcomed Him as king with palm branches.
- He drove out money-changers because the temple was being used for profit and not for worship and prayer.
- Examples of lessons: serve others, stand for justice. Kenyan example: joining a Harambee to support a needy family; speaking against bribery at school.
