English — Adverbs

Subtopic: Types of Adverbs (for ages 9, Kenya)
What is an adverb?

An adverb is a word that tells more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It answers questions like: How? Where? When? How often? and How much?

Adverbs of Manner (How?) 🏃‍♂️

Tell us how something happens.

  • quickly — She ran quickly.
  • slowly — The tortoise walked slowly.
  • carefully — He writes carefully.
Many end in -ly, but not all (fast, hard).

Adverbs of Place (Where?) 🏞️

Tell us where something happens.

  • here — Come here.
  • there — Put the book there.
  • outside — Children play outside.
Also possible as phrases: in the market, at school, on the road.

Adverbs of Time (When?) ⏰

Tell us when something happens.

  • now — I am studying now.
  • yesterday — We visited the farm yesterday.
  • tomorrow — School starts tomorrow.
Also: soon, later, already.

Adverbs of Frequency (How often?) 🔁

Tell us how often something happens.

  • always — She always does her homework.
  • often — We often visit the market.
  • never — He never eats sweets before dinner.
Some go before the main verb: always, usually, never.

Adverbs of Degree (How much?) 🌡️

Tell us how strong or how much.

  • very — It is very hot today.
  • quite — The food is quite tasty.
  • almost — I almost missed the matatu.
They often come before adjectives or other adverbs.
Short rules to remember
  • Adverbs answer: How? Where? When? How often? How much?
  • Many adverbs end in -ly (quick → quickly), but some do not (fast, well).
  • Adverb phrases can be used: in the morning (time), at the market (place).
  • Position often: after the verb (He ran quickly) or before an adjective (very tall).

Practice — try these!

  1. Underline the adverb and say its type: "Mama cooks well."
  2. Choose the adverb for the sentence: "We will go to the farm ______." (tomorrow / quickly)
  3. Write an adverb of place to finish this sentence: "The children play ______."
  4. Which adverb answers 'How often'? (always / here)
  5. Change the adjective to an adverb: "quick" → ______
  6. Make a sentence using "often". (Hint: Think of school or market.)
Answers: 1) well — manner. 2) tomorrow. 3) outside / at the field / at the playground. 4) always. 5) quickly. 6) Example: "I often walk to school."
Final tip

When you find a word that tells more about the action, ask: How? Where? When? How often? or How much? That will help you know which type of adverb it is.

Good luck — keep practising with sentences about your day in Nairobi, Mombasa or your village!
