Importance of Turn Taking in Oral Communication (English)
Turn taking means letting one person speak at a time. In English, good turn taking uses the correct grammar so we are polite and clear. These notes explain simple grammar you can use in class, at home, or on the playground in Kenya. π§π½π¦πΎπ£οΈ
1. Polite requests and offers (using modals)
Use words like can, may, could, would + subject + base verb to ask for a turn politely.
- Can I speak? β Can + I + speak
- May I answer the question? β May + I + answer
- Could you let me finish, please? β Could + you + let
Tip: Add "please" to be extra polite: "May I speak, please?"
2. Asking questions (start a turn)
Questions tell people you want to speak. Two simple types:
- Yes/No questions (helpful in turn taking): auxiliary + subject + verb β "Is it my turn?" "Are you ready?"
- Wh- questions (who, what, where, when, why): "Who is next?" "What did you say?"
3. Short replies and backβchanneling
Use short replies when you want to listen or agree. These keep the conversation smooth.
- "Yes." / "No." β or full: "Yes, I can." "No, I cannot."
- "I agree." / "Me too." / "Okay."
- Use small sounds to show you are listening: "Mm-hm." or "I see."
4. Showing you finished β giving the turn to someone else
Say short clear phrases to show your speaking is done:
- "I'm finished." / "That's my answer."
- "Now it's your turn." / "Your turn, please."
- Use words like then, after, now to show order: "First I read, then you read."
5. Polite interruption and clarification
If you must interrupt: start with "Excuse me," + short question or sentence.
- "Excuse me, may I add something?"
- Ask to repeat: "Can you repeat that, please?" or "What do you mean?"
6. Simple practice dialogues (use correct grammar)
Muthoni: "May I answer the question, Teacher?"
Teacher: "Yes, Muthoni. Go ahead."
Muthoni: "Thank you. I think the answer is 12." β
Juma: "Can I have a turn to kick?"
Amina: "Okay, your turn now."
Juma: "Thank you!" β½
7. Small exercises (try them)
