Subtopic: Wise Buying ๐
Wise buying means choosing things carefully so you get good value for your money. It helps you save Kenya Shillings (Ksh), avoid waste and buy safe food and products.
Why wise buying matters (for kids in Kenya)
- Save pocket money or school fees (Ksh). ๐ฐ
- Buy healthy food โ avoid spoiled food at the market. ๐ฅฆ
- Stop waste โ less food thrown away at home. โป๏ธ
- Learn smart habits for the future. โ
Steps to be a wise buyer
- Plan: Make a list before you go shopping. Example: milk powder, maize flour, tomatoes.
- Set a budget: Know how much Ksh you can spend. Stick to it.
- Compare prices: Check prices at the supermarket (e.g., Naivas, Carrefour, Quickmart) and at the market (mama mboga). Which is cheaper?
- Check quality: Look for fresh produce, clean packaging and no holes or wet spots.
- Check dates: Look for expiry or "best before" dates on food and medicines.
- Measure unit price: Compare price per kg or per litre, not only the total price.
- Avoid impulse buys: If you didnโt plan to buy it, ask yourself: Do I really need this?
- Keep the receipt: Ask for a receipt (sticker or paper). You can return or complain if something is wrong.
โ I have a shopping list
โ I know my budget (Ksh ___ )
โ I checked price and weight (kg or L)
โ I checked expiry dates
โ I checked food looks fresh and clean
โ I kept the receipt
Simple example: Check unit price
You see two maize flour packs:
500 g = Ksh 100
1 kg = Ksh 190
Which is cheaper per 1 kg?
Pack A: 100 Ksh per 500 g โ 200 Ksh per 1 kg. Pack B: 190 Ksh per 1 kg. So Pack B is cheaper. ๐ฏ
Tips for buying at the market (mama mboga) and kiosks
- Buy fruits and vegetables that look firm and bright โ avoid bruised or smelly ones. ๐๐
- Choose clean stalls and sellers who keep produce off the ground.
- If bargaining, be polite. You can save a little Ksh by asking for a fair price.
- Wash fresh produce well before eating.
Your rights as a buyer in Kenya (simple)
- You can ask for a receipt. Keep it! ๐งพ
- If an item is broken or wrong, ask the shop to exchange or refund it.
- If a seller is unfair, tell an adult. You can also ask the shop manager or contact consumer help groups like the Competition Authority of Kenya (they help protect buyers).
Fun activity for class or at home
Role-play: One child is the buyer with Ksh 200 and a shopping list. Another is the seller. Practice checking price, weight, and asking for a receipt. Who buys the best items without going over budget?
(Short version for your pocket: Make a list, check prices and weight, check expiry, keep receipt.)
