Natural Environment

Subject: Social Studies • Topic: Natural and Built Environments • Subtopic: Natural Environment
Age: 10 (Kenya)

1. What is the natural environment?

The natural environment is everything that exists in nature without people building it. This includes plants, animals, mountains, rivers, lakes, the soil and the weather. Think of forests, the savanna, Mount Kenya and the Indian Ocean. 🌳🏔️🌊🐘

2. Parts of the natural environment (with Kenyan examples)

  • Landforms: mountains and hills — Mount Kenya, Aberdares. 🏔️
  • Water bodies: rivers, lakes and the sea — Tana River, Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana, the Indian Ocean. 🌊
  • Forests and trees: Mau Forest, Kakamega Forest. 🌳
  • Grasslands and savanna: Maasai Mara, Amboseli plains where wildlife live. 🌾🐘
  • Soil and rocks: good soil for farming (e.g., highlands of Central Kenya) and minerals like soda ash at Lake Magadi. ⛰️
  • Climate and weather: rainfall, sunshine and temperatures that affect crops and people. ☀️🌧️

3. Why the natural environment is important

  • Provides water we drink and crops need (rivers, lakes, rain).
  • Gives food for people and animals (farms, forests, fishing). 🐟
  • Homes for wildlife (national parks and reserves).
  • Controls climate and keeps soil healthy for farming.
  • Gives us beauty and places for tourism and culture (e.g., visitors to Mt Kenya or the coast). 💚

4. How people use the natural environment

  • Farming and growing food (tea, coffee, maize, vegetables).
  • Fishing in lakes and the ocean.
  • Collecting firewood and timber (but this must be done carefully).
  • Mining minerals and using water for power (dams).
  • Tourism: people visit parks and mountains to see animals and nature.

5. Threats to the natural environment

People and nature can harm the environment in many ways:

  • Deforestation — cutting too many trees (causes soil erosion and less rain).
  • Pollution — dumping rubbish in rivers and lakes, plastic in the ocean.
  • Overfishing — catching too many fish so numbers fall.
  • Overgrazing — too many animals eat the grass and the soil becomes poor.
  • Climate change — weather becomes less predictable and can harm farms.

6. How we can care for the natural environment

  • Plant trees and protect forests (tree nurseries, community planting). 🌱
  • Save water — turn off taps and use water wisely.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle rubbish (no plastic in rivers).
  • Protect animals and their habitats — follow park rules and avoid littering.
  • Use sustainable farming methods to keep soil healthy.

7. Short activities (do in class or at home)

  1. Draw a simple picture showing a river, a forest and a farm. Label each part.
  2. Visit a local tree nursery or help plant a tree with family or school.
  3. Make a list of five things in your area that are part of the natural environment.

8. Quick quiz (answer in short)

  • 1. Name two rivers or lakes in Kenya.
  • 2. Why are trees important?
  • 3. Give one way you can protect water in your home.

9. Key words (with simple meanings)

Natural environment
All living and non-living things that occur naturally.
Deforestation
Cutting down many trees and not planting new ones.
Conservation
Protecting nature so plants and animals can survive.
Ecosystem
A community of plants, animals and their environment working together.
Remember: The natural environment gives us many things we need. If we look after it, it will look after us and future generations in Kenya. 🇰🇪
