What is leadership?

Leadership means guiding or helping people. A leader makes decisions, listens to others, and helps solve problems. Leaders can be in school, at home, in the county, or in the national government.

What is political change?

Political change happens when people change rules, laws, or leaders. Change can be small (a new rule in your school) or big (a new government law). Good change helps people live better lives.

Leaders in Kenya — who are they?

  • President – leads the country.
  • Members of Parliament (MPs) – make national laws.
  • Senators – represent counties at national level.
  • Governors – lead county governments.
  • Members of County Assembly (MCAs) – make county laws and check the governor.
  • Judges and courts – make sure laws are fair and followed.

How do leaders bring change?

  • Making or changing laws in Parliament or county assemblies.
  • Running development projects like building schools, roads, or clinics.
  • Listening to people and fixing problems they raise.
  • Following the Constitution (the big rule book for Kenya).
Did you know? The 2010 Constitution of Kenya brought devolution. This means counties get more power to plan and deliver services close to people.

How can political change happen peacefully?

Peaceful change is important so everyone stays safe. Ways include:

  • Voting in elections organized by IEBC 🗳️.
  • Talking at public meetings (barazas) and asking questions.
  • Writing letters or petitions to leaders.
  • Joining youth groups that help the community.
  • Using the courts if a law is unfair.

Good qualities of a leader

  • Honest — tells the truth.
  • Fair — treats everyone the same.
  • Listens — hears what people say.
  • Brave — faces problems without hurting others.
  • Works for everyone — helps rich and poor.
Remember: Leaders should serve the people. When leaders are good, communities grow and children get better schools and health care.

Every child can take part

Even though you cannot vote yet, you can still help make change:

  • Speak up in class and in community meetings.
  • Join school clubs that help your neighbourhood.
  • Learn about leaders and ask your parents how elections work.
  • Be kind and fair — practice being a good leader every day.
VOTE
A ballot box helps people choose leaders during elections.
