Resources in Kenya β Agriculture πΎ
Topic: Resources and Economic Activities
Subject: Social Studies β Age: 10 years
What is agricultural resource?
Agricultural resources are things we use to grow food and keep animals. They include land, water, seeds, animals and farmers' skills. In Kenya, agriculture is very important because it gives us food, jobs and things to sell to other countries.
Main crops and where they grow π
- Maize π½ β the main food crop. Grown in Rift Valley, Western and some highlands.
- Tea π΅ β grows well in cool highlands (Kericho, Nandi, parts of Central Kenya).
- Coffee β β grown in Central highlands like Nyeri and Kiambu.
- Horticulture (flowers & vegetables) π·π₯ β grown around Nairobi, Naivasha and Mount Kenya slopes; many are exported.
- Sugarcane π¬ β grown in Western and Coast lowlands (e.g., Kakamega, Kisumu, coastal farms).
- Wheat and barley β grown in highland areas like parts of Rift Valley.
- Fruits like mangoes, bananas, coconuts β common on the Coast and in some lowland areas.
Livestock and pastoralism ππ
Many people keep animals: cows, goats, sheep and camels. In arid and semi-arid areas (Northern Kenya β Turkana, Marsabit), people are pastoralists β they move with their animals to find water and grass.
Why farming is important:
- Gives food for families.
- Provides jobs for farmers and people who work on farms.
- Brings money when we sell crops and flowers to other countries.
- Supplies raw materials (e.g., cotton for clothes, tea for export).
Seasons that matter βοΈπ§οΈ
Farmers watch the rains. Kenya has main rainy seasons:
- Long rains: March to May β important for planting many crops.
- Short rains: October to December β also used for planting.
Types of farming in Kenya
- Small-scale/subsistence farming: Most families grow food for their own use (e.g., maize, beans).
- Large-scale/plantations: Big farms grow tea, coffee, sugarcane and flowers for sale and export.
- Irrigation farming: Uses water from rivers or dams (e.g., Tana River area) to grow crops where it is dry.
- Pastoralism: Keeping and moving animals to find pasture and water.
Taking care of our resources β Simple farming good habits π±
- Plant trees to stop soil erosion and give shade.
- Water crops carefully (donβt waste water).
- Rotate crops so soil stays healthy.
- Use compost or manure to feed the soil.
Try this:
- Draw a small farm and label two crops that grow in your area.
- Ask an adult: what crop does our family eat most often?
π½ππ»
Quick quiz (write answers)
