Citizenship

(Topic: Political Systems and Governance — Social Studies, Age 10, Kenya)

What is citizenship?

Citizenship means you are a member of a country. If you are a Kenyan citizen, Kenya is your country. Citizens have rights (things they can do) and responsibilities (things they must do).

How can someone be a Kenyan citizen?
  • By birth: Born in Kenya and at least one parent is Kenyan. 🇰🇪
  • By descent: Born outside Kenya but has a Kenyan parent.
  • By registration: Some people (for example, children of Kenyan parents or spouses) can apply to be registered as citizens.
  • By naturalization: A foreigner who lives in Kenya for many years and follows rules can apply to become a citizen.

(These are simple explanations. The law has more details in the Constitution and citizenship laws.)

Rights of citizens
  • Right to education 🎒
  • Right to health care 🏥
  • Right to speak and vote when older (vote at 18) 🗳️
  • Right to worship and be treated fairly ✨
Responsibilities of citizens
  • Obey the laws of Kenya ⚖️
  • Respect others and their rights 🤝
  • Protect the environment — plant trees and keep places clean 🌳
  • Pay taxes when you grow up and work 💼 (adults)
Kenyan symbols and important documents

🇰🇪 Flag — shows our country.
🎶 National anthem — we sing it on special days.
Important documents: birth certificate and national ID (ID when older) help prove you are a Kenyan citizen.
