Transport in Kenya
Subject: Social Studies — Topic: Resources and Economic Activities — Subtopic: Transport in Kenya
Target age: 10 years
What is transport?
Transport is how people, goods and animals move from one place to another. Good transport helps farmers, traders, tourists and industries to grow and share resources.
Types of transport in Kenya (with examples)
- Road transport 🚗🛻 — Cars, buses, lorries, matatus (public minibuses), boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis).
Example: Nairobi–Mombasa Highway carries many goods and people between the coast and inland.
- Rail transport 🚆 — Trains that carry people and cargo.
Example: The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) runs between Mombasa and Nairobi and helps move freight faster to the port.
- Air transport ✈️ — Planes for passengers and some goods.
Example: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) and Moi International Airport (Mombasa).
- Water transport 🚢🛶 — Ships, boats and ferries on the coast and on lakes and rivers.
Examples: Mombasa Port, ferries on Lake Victoria near Kisumu, small boats along the coast.
- Pipelines — Pipes that move oil and other liquids.
Example: Oil pipeline from Mombasa to Nairobi that carries fuel.
- Non-motorised 🚶♀️🚲 — Walking, bicycles and carts used especially in villages.
How transport helps resources and economic activities
- Farmers bring produce (vegetables, tea, coffee, fruits) to markets in towns and cities.
- Fishers use boats to sell fish from Lake Victoria and the coast to towns like Kisumu and Mombasa.
- Traders move goods to and from Mombasa Port for export and import.
- Tourists use planes, roads and trains to visit parks like Maasai Mara and Amboseli — this brings money to communities.
- Industries use lorries and trains to take raw materials and finished goods across the country and to other countries.
Did you know?
- The SGR helps move cargo faster from Mombasa Port to Nairobi, making trade quicker.
- Matatus and boda-bodas are important for daily travel for many Kenyans.
Problems with transport in some places
- Some rural roads are bad or become muddy in rainy seasons — farmers find it hard to bring goods to market.
- Traffic jams in big towns like Nairobi waste time and fuel.
- Accidents can happen if people do not follow road rules or wear safety gear.
- High fuel prices make transport expensive for sellers and buyers.
Ways to improve transport
- Build and maintain more good roads in villages.
- Use more trains and ferries for heavy goods.
- Teach road safety and follow traffic rules.
- Plan public transport so people can travel without jams.
Safety tips for children
- Always use a seatbelt in a car. Fasten children’s seats if available.
- Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or boda-boda (motorbike).
- Use zebra crossings and wait for the green light where there is a traffic light.
- Do not stand on the back of a lorry or hang out of moving vehicles.
Class activities (easy and fun)
- Draw three transport types you see in your town and label them.
- Match game: Draw a line from the transport to its job:
- Boat — carry fish
- Train — carry heavy goods fast
- Matatu — carry many passengers

- List five foods that travel from your village to the nearest town.
