CRE: Creation — Knowing Talents and Abilities

Memory Verse:
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others." — 1 Peter 4:10

What are talents and abilities?

Talents and abilities are the special things God gives to each person. They are gifts that help us do certain tasks well — like singing, helping others, drawing, running, or teaching. In the Bible God gives people gifts so they can love and serve others.

Think: God made you special. Everyone has at least one thing they can do well.

Examples of talents and abilities (Kenyan examples):

  • Helping on the shamba (farm) — planting, watering, caring for animals.
  • Singing or playing in the church choir.
  • Drawing, painting or beadwork (kanga patterns, beaded bracelets).
  • Storytelling and reciting poems (for school or church).
  • Playing football or other sports and being a good team player.
  • Fixing small things (mending shoes, repairing toys).

How can you discover your talents?

  1. Try new things at school, church and home (join clubs, help in class).
  2. Notice what you enjoy and do without getting tired.
  3. Ask family, friends and teachers what they think you are good at.
  4. Practice often — skills grow when you work on them.
Activity: Make your Talent Wheel

Draw a circle and divide it into 6 parts. In each part write one thing you enjoy or are good at. Colour each part. Put a smiley face on the one you think is your strongest talent.

🎨
Draw
Tip: Use colours that make you happy. You can do this alone or with your classmates.

Group idea for class or church: Form small groups. Each child shows one thing they can do (sing a short song, draw a quick picture, do a short skit). The group encourages and says one nice thing to each child.

Why should we use our talents?

  • To help others — at home, church and the community.
  • To praise God who gave us the gifts.
  • To make the world a better place (help the sick, teach friends, care for the environment).
Short Bible Story (simple):

Jesus told a story about servants who were given talents (money and gifts) by their master. Those who used what they had were praised. This story teaches us to use what God gives us and not hide it.

(Based on Matthew 25:14–30 — tell in class or read with your guardian.)

Think and answer:

  1. What is one thing you enjoy doing at school or at home?
  2. Who can help you learn more about your talent?
  3. How can you use your talent to help your family or church?
Short Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for the gifts you gave me. Help me to learn and use them to help others and to praise you. Amen.

Teacher / Parent notes
  • Learning objectives: children should name at least two talents they have and plan one way to use a talent to serve others.
  • Materials: paper, crayons, scissors, space to show talent, Bible or printed verse.
  • Assessment: watch participation in Talent Wheel activity and ask the reflection questions.
  • Include local culture: encourage examples from the community (choir, farming, storytelling, crafts).

Remember: Every child is special. When we share our talents, we help others and honor God.
