CRE: The Bible — Respect For The Elderly

Subtopic: Respect For The Elderly
For: Kenyan learners (age 10)

"Love and respect the elderly — they teach us wisdom." (CRE class)

1. What the Bible teaches

  • Honour your parents: Exodus 20:12 says to honour your father and mother — this is pleasing to God.
  • Respect the aged: Leviticus 19:32 tells us to stand up in the presence of the elderly and respect them.
  • Treat older people like family: 1 Timothy 5:1–2 asks us to treat older men as fathers and older women as mothers.
  • Grandchildren are a blessing: Proverbs 17:6 says grandchildren are like a crown to the elders.

2. Why we must respect elders

  1. They have wisdom from life and can teach us good ways to live.
  2. Respecting elders pleases God and keeps families peaceful.
  3. Elders look after traditions, culture and help in the community (e.g., mzee, bibi, church leaders).
  4. Showing respect makes elders feel loved and valued.

3. How to show respect (easy actions)

  • Greet elders politely: "Good morning, Mzee" or "Shikamoo" and reply "Marahaba".
  • Listen when elders teach or tell stories — keep quiet until they finish.
  • Help with small jobs: carry water jugs, sweep, fetch firewood, or offer a seat on public transport.
  • Speak kindly and never insult or laugh at their mistakes.
  • Ask for their advice and thank them for their help.

4. Examples from our Kenyan life

- In many villages a mzee or bibi leads family meetings — listen to their advice.
- In church, give seats to older people and greet the elders after service.
- At school events, help elderly visitors to sit and move safely.

Memory Verse:
"Honour your father and your mother." — Exodus 20:12
(Ask your teacher to help you learn the whole verse.)

5. Fun class activities

  • Role play: In groups, act a short scene showing how to greet and help an elder.
  • Interview: Visit a grandparent or elder in your neighbourhood and ask 3 questions about life. Report what you learned.
  • Draw & write: Draw a picture of you helping an elder and write one sentence about why you helped.
  • Respect checklist: Tick the boxes when you do kind things for elders at home this week:

6. Short quiz (answer with your teacher)

  1. Which Bible commandment tells us to honour our parents?
  2. Give two simple ways to show respect to an elder.
  3. What is the Swahili greeting for elders that shows respect?
  4. Why should we listen to elders' stories?
  5. Name one place elders help lead in the community.

7. Short prayer

Dear God, thank you for our elders. Help us to respect, listen to and care for them. Give them good health and joy. Amen. 🙏

Teacher's tip: Encourage pupils to practise one respectful action every day for a week and share it next lesson.
