CRE Notes: Preparing For The Coming Of Jesus Christ

Subtopic: Persistence In Prayer | For learners aged 10 (Kenya)
Learning Goals
  • Know what persistence in prayer means.
  • Learn Bible stories that teach persistent prayer.
  • Practice how to pray regularly as we prepare for the coming of Jesus.
Memory Verse
"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." — Luke 11:9 (easy to remember)
Bible Stories
  1. The Persistent Widow (Luke 18:1–8)
A widow kept asking a judge for help. He answered her because she kept asking. Jesus taught that we should pray and not give up.
  2. The Friend at Midnight (Luke 11:5–8)
A friend came at night and asked for bread. The friend gave in because the man kept asking. Jesus shows that persistent asking is good.
What "Persistence in Prayer" Means

Persistence in prayer means that we keep praying even if the answer is not quick. It is like asking your parent for water when you are thirsty — you keep asking kindly until you get it. We trust God and do not stop praying.

How to Pray Persistently (Easy Steps)
  • Find a quiet place like your bedroom, the church compound, or under a tree at home.
  • Start with praise: say "Thank you, God" for your family and food.
  • Ask about the things that matter: help for a sick neighbour, wisdom for your teacher, or peace in your country.
  • Keep praying every day — morning and night. Be kind and patient.
  • Remember: God hears you even if the answer comes later.
Examples from Kenyan Life
  • Pray every morning before you go to school — for safety inside the matatu and at school.
  • Pray for farmers during drought so the rains will come.
  • Pray for sick relatives to get better and for nurses and doctors in our hospitals.
  • Pray for peace during elections and for leaders to make good choices.
Activities (Do with your class or family)
  1. Prayer Journal: Draw or write one thing you will pray for each day for a week. At the end, see what changed.
  2. Role Play: In groups, act the story of the Persistent Widow or the Friend at Midnight. Show how they kept asking.
  3. Prayer Walk: Walk around your neighbourhood with a teacher or parent and quietly pray for homes, schools, and shops you pass.
Quick Questions to Think About
  • What does persistence in prayer teach us about our trust in God?
  • When have you prayed and waited? What happened?
  • Who will you pray for this week? Write their name in your journal.
Sample Short Prayer (Say this with your class)

"Dear Jesus, thank you for listening to me. Help me to pray every day and to trust you. Bless my family, my teachers and my school. Come soon, Lord. Amen."

Note for Teachers / Parents

Encourage children to pray regularly and to keep a simple prayer book (a small exercise book). Praise their efforts and remind them that God answers in his time. Use role plays and group prayers to make the idea of persistence practical and fun.

Summary

Persistence in prayer means praying often and not giving up. The Bible stories teach us to keep asking and trusting God. As we prepare for the coming of Jesus, let us pray every day, help others, and live in a way that shows we are ready.

Keep praying
