Prophets, John the Baptist, Mary & people got ready
Short introduction
Before Jesus was born many people were told about Him. God and His prophets told people to prepare — to say sorry for wrong things, to help others, and to be ready to receive Jesus. Preparing meant changing the heart and living in a good way.
Key points (easy to remember)
- Prophets spoke about Jesus: Long before His birth, prophets promised a Savior (like Isaiah).
- John the Baptist’s job: He told people to repent (say sorry) so they could be ready (Matthew 3:1–3).
- Mary and Joseph: They listened to God and prepared their hearts and home for Jesus.
- People got ready by: praying, following God's rules, sharing with others and being kind.
Bible verse to learn
"A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord...’" — Luke 3:4 (simple)
How people prepared — short story style
Imagine a village like ours in Kenya. People hear John the Baptist calling at the river (like in John’s story). They come, say sorry, get baptized, and promise to change. Mothers and fathers teach children to pray and to be kind to neighbours. Mary says "Yes" to God and gets ready to be Jesus' mother. This is how a whole community prepared for the coming King.

How you (a child) can prepare today
- Pray every morning and night — talk to God like a friend.
- Say sorry when you behave wrongly and try not to do it again.
- Help someone at home or at school — share food or help with chores.
- Learn Bible stories in Sunday school and tell them to your friends.
- Be kind and forgive others — this shows your heart is ready for Jesus.
Fun classroom activity (5–10 minutes)
- Role play: One child pretends to be John the Baptist calling people at the river. Others respond: “We will say sorry and help!”
- Drawing: Draw a picture of Mary saying “Yes” and helping in her home. Put a big heart near Jesus.
- Song: Sing a simple song in Sunday school about getting ready for Jesus (ask your teacher for one).
Quick questions to check understanding
- Who told people to prepare the way for Jesus?
- What does it mean to "repent"?
- Name one thing children can do to prepare for Jesus today.
Short prayer you can say
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus. Help me to be ready in my heart. Teach me to pray, to be kind and to listen to You. Amen.
Note: Teachers and parents can use this in Sunday school or at home. Add local examples from your church or community to make it easier to understand.
