CRE Notes: Teachings of Jesus Christ — Recovery of the Lost Human Beings

Topic: Preparing for the Coming of Jesus Christ
Subject: Christian Religious Education (CRE) — For learners aged about 10 years (Kenya)

Learning goals
  • Know three parables that show how Jesus recovers the lost (Sheep, Coin, Son).
  • Understand that God loves every person and wants everyone to turn back to Him.
  • Learn ways we can prepare for Jesus' coming by showing love, forgiveness and sharing God's message.

Short retellings (easy)

1. The Lost Sheep — A shepherd had 100 sheep. One wandered off. He left the 99 and went to find the one. When he found it, he rejoiced and carried it home. Jesus says God is like that shepherd. He looks for people who are lost and is happy when they return.

2. The Lost Coin — A woman lost one of her ten silver coins. She cleaned her house and looked carefully until she found it. She called friends to celebrate. Jesus teaches that heaven rejoices when one lost person turns back to God.

3. The Prodigal Son — A son left home and made mistakes. He returned home and his father welcomed him with love and a celebration. This shows God's ready forgiveness and love for anyone who comes home to Him.

What Jesus teaches us (main points)

  • God loves each person. No one is forgotten.
  • We must say sorry (repent) and try to change when we do wrong.
  • God forgives and welcomes people back with joy.
  • Christians should help others return to God by loving, forgiving and inviting them to church.
  • Preparing for Jesus' coming means living as Jesus taught — kindness, prayer, honesty and helping the needy.

Memory verse (simple)

Luke 15:7 (KJV): "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth..."
(This means heaven is glad when someone turns back to God.)

How this fits Kenya (examples)

  • Like a herder in our village who searches for a lost lamb, God searches for people who are lost.
  • Churches in Kenyan towns celebrate when someone decides to follow Jesus again, just like the people in the stories.
  • We can work together in Sunday school, at home, or in our community to welcome people back — visiting the sick, helping neighbours, and forgiving friends.

Class activities (fun and simple)

  1. Role play: Act out the Lost Sheep or the Prodigal Son. One child is the lost person; others are the finder and the community celebrating.
  2. Craft: Make a paper sheep using cotton wool and draw a heart sticker to show love. (Materials: paper, cotton wool, glue, crayons.)
  3. Game: "Find the Lost Coin" — hide a coin or small object and let groups look for it. Celebrate loudly when it is found to show joy.
  4. Draw and share: Draw someone helping another person come back to God (e.g., friend going to church together) and explain why it helps prepare for Jesus.

Questions for thinking or class discussion

  • Which of the three stories do you like most and why?
  • Who in your life could you help come back to God? What will you do?
  • How does forgiving someone help us prepare for Jesus' coming?

Short prayer (for children)

Dear God, thank you that you love everyone. Help us to forgive, to welcome people who are lost and to live like Jesus. Teach us how to care for others so we are ready for Jesus' coming. Amen.

Teacher tip: Use local stories or people the children know (without naming) to make the parables real. Keep activities short (10–20 minutes) and active.
Quick review: Jesus looks for those who are lost, rejoices when they return and teaches us to love and forgive. Practise this at home, at school and in church.

Prepared for CRE learners (age ~10). Use in Sunday school, classroom or at home with parents.
