Grade 5 Social Studies Political Systems And Governance – Electoral Process In Kenya Notes
Electoral Process in Kenya
(Topic: Political Systems and Governance — Social Studies, Age 10)
An election is when people choose leaders by voting. In Kenya, elections are run by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Elections help citizens pick leaders for national and county government.
Types of Elections in Kenya
- President — the head of the country.
- Members of National Assembly (MPs) — represent people in Parliament.
- Senators — represent counties in the Senate.
- County Governor — leads a county government.
- Women Representatives and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) — represent special groups and local wards.
When do elections happen?
General elections are held every five years. There can also be by-elections if a leader leaves office before the end of their term.
Who can vote?
You must be a Kenyan citizen and at least 18 years old. You must be registered with IEBC and bring your ID on voting day.
How to Vote — Step by Step
Find the place IEBC told you to vote.
Use your national ID card for verification.
You may get several ballots for different leaders.
Go behind the screen and mark or stamp your choice. Fold the ballot so others cannot see it.
Put the folded ballot into the ballot box.
Note: IEBC may use fingerprint or other checks to confirm your identity.
A secret ballot means you choose in private. No one should force you to tell or show how you voted. This keeps voting fair and free.
Counting and Results
After voting ends, election officials count the ballot papers. Results are announced by IEBC. If people disagree with results, they may go to court for help.
Be a good citizen
- Vote peacefully.
- Do not bribe or be bribed.
- Respect others' choices.
