What are Human Rights? 👥📜

Human rights are things every person should have to live happily and safely. In Kenya these rights are written in the Constitution. Rights are for everyone — children and adults.

Some important rights

  • Right to education 📚 — go to school and learn.
  • Right to health ❤️‍🩹 — see a doctor and stay healthy.
  • Right to life and safety 🛡️ — be protected from harm.
  • Right to equality 🤝 — not be treated badly because of tribe, gender or where you come from.
  • Right to speak and be heard 💬 — say what you think in a kind way.

Special notes for children

Children have extra care. Adults (parents, teachers, leaders) must protect children's rights and make sure they can learn, play and be healthy.

Who protects our rights? 🔒

In Kenya, rights are protected by:

  • Constitution of Kenya — the big rule book for the country.
  • Courts and judges — they check if laws are fair.
  • Police — help keep people safe.
  • Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) — checks human rights problems.
  • Teachers, parents and community leaders — they care for children every day.

What can you do? ✅

  • Learn your rights and talk about them.
  • Be kind and respect other people's rights.
  • If someone is hurt or bullied, tell a teacher, parent or local chief.
  • Report serious problems to the police or KNCHR — adults can help you do this.

Quick tip

Keep a safe diary: write dates and what happened if you or a friend has a problem. This helps adults help you better.

Example: If a classmate is bullied

  1. Tell a teacher or parent about the bullying.
  2. Help the friend feel safe — stand with them and be kind.
  3. Adults will act to stop the bullying and protect rights.
  4. If school rules are broken, the school will follow the law to help everyone.
