Subtopic: Weather and Climate in Kenya

Weather ๐ŸŒค๏ธ โ€” The condition of the air at one place and for a short time (today's sun, rain, wind, or temperature).
Climate ๐ŸŒ โ€” The usual pattern of weather in a place over many years (what the weather is normally like in a season or region).
Hot
Rain
Cool

Where the different climates are in Kenya

  • Coast (Mombasa, Kilifi) โ€” Hot and humid. Lots of sunshine and heavy rains during the short rains. ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒด
  • Lake Victoria region (Kisumu, Homa Bay) โ€” Warm with more rain. Good for farming and fishing. ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŒง๏ธ
  • Highlands (Nairobi, Nyeri, Mount Kenya) โ€” Cooler and pleasant. More rain in the long rains. โ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ
  • Arid and semi-arid north and east (Turkana, Marsabit) โ€” Very dry, hot and little rainfall. People and animals depend on scarce water. ๐Ÿชโ˜€๏ธ
  • South-eastern lowlands โ€” Hot and dry with occasional rains.

When it rains in Kenya

Most of Kenya has two rainy seasons:

  • Long rains โ€” March to May (important for planting crops).
  • Short rains โ€” October to December (shorter but can be heavy).

Some places only get one rainy season (monomodal), and the dry north may go many months without rain.

How weather and climate affect people

  • Farming: Rain helps crops grow. If rains fail, farmers lose harvests. ๐ŸŒพ
  • Water: Rivers, lakes, and wells provide water. Droughts make water scarce. ๐Ÿ’ง
  • Homes and clothes: People build houses and wear clothes that suit the climate (cool homes in highlands, light clothes at the coast). ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘—
  • Jobs: Fishing, farming, tourism, and herding depend on climate and weather. ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿšœ

How people adapt (built environment)

  • Rainwater harvesting: storing rain in tanks for dry months. โ˜”โžก๏ธ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ
  • Irrigation systems for farms to water crops when rains fail. ๐Ÿšฟโžก๏ธfields
  • Strong houses and drainage in towns to reduce flood damage. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ
  • Planting drought-resistant crops and using new farming methods. ๐ŸŒฑ

Climate change โ€” simple facts

Climate change means the climate is becoming warmer and less predictable. In Kenya this can cause:

  • More droughts, less water for people and animals.
  • Stronger rains that cause floods in towns and farms.
  • Changes to when crops can be planted and harvested.

Try this (class activity)
  1. Draw a simple map of Kenya and colour the highlands, coast, and dry north.
  2. Write the months of the long rains and short rains on the map.
  3. Discuss how your family gets water and how weather affects them.
