People And Population — Population Distribution In Kenya

Topic: Population Distribution
Subject: Social Studies
For: Class 6 / Age 10

What is Population Distribution?

Population distribution means how people are spread out across a place. In Kenya, some places have many people living close together (crowded), and some places have very few people.

Where do most people live in Kenya?

  • Highlands around Nairobi and central Kenya — people like the cool weather and good farming land.
  • Lake Victoria region (west) — towns like Kisumu have many people because of fishing and farming.
  • Coast (east) — cities such as Mombasa and towns along the coast have many people because of trade and fishing.
  • Rift Valley towns — places like Nakuru and Eldoret are busy with farming and businesses.
  • Northern Kenya (arid areas) — places like Turkana and Marsabit have few people because it is dry and hot with little water.

Why do people live where they do? (Simple reasons)

  1. Water: People live where rivers, lakes or rainfall can give water for homes and farms.
  2. Good land: Fertile soil means crops grow well (e.g., central highlands).
  3. Climate: Cool, pleasant weather is easier to live in than very dry heat.
  4. Jobs and trade: Cities and towns (Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu) have jobs, markets and shops.
  5. Roads and schools: Places with good roads and services attract people.
  6. History and culture: Some groups have lived in an area for a long time, so towns grow there.

Why this matters (short)

Knowing where people live helps the government plan for schools, hospitals, roads and water. It also helps people know where jobs and farms are.

Activity for Class

  1. On a map of Kenya, colour the areas with many people (central, lakeside, coast) in green and the dry north in brown.
  2. Choose five counties. Ask classmates to stand for each county: most people stand for Nairobi, fewest stand for Turkana. Count and write the numbers — this shows distribution.

Key Words

  • Distribution: how people are spread out.
  • Density: how many people live in a place (crowded or not).
  • Urban: towns and cities.
  • Rural: villages and countryside.

Summary: In Kenya, population is not the same everywhere. Highland, lakeside and coastal areas have many people because of water, good land and jobs. The dry north has fewer people because it is hard to live there.

Good luck — try the class activity and share what you find!
