Democracy in Society

Subject: Social Studies — Topic: Political Systems and Governance — Subtopic: Democracy in Society (for age 10, Kenya)

What is democracy?

Democracy is when people choose their leaders and make rules together. In Kenya, citizens vote in elections to pick leaders like the President, Members of Parliament and county governors. Democracy helps people have a say in decisions that affect their lives.

How democracy works in Kenya

  • Vote: Citizens who are 18 and above can vote to choose leaders. Elections are run by IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission).
  • Leaders: We have the President (national leader), Parliament (laws), and judges (courts). These groups share power so no one becomes too strong.
  • Constitution: The Constitution of Kenya (2010) tells how the country should be run and protects people's rights.
  • Counties: Kenya has counties with governors and local assemblies. People at the local level also get to choose who leads them.

Rights and responsibilities

Some rights

  • Right to education
  • Right to speak and share ideas
  • Right to be treated fairly

Some responsibilities

  • Follow the laws
  • Respect others and their beliefs
  • Vote when you are old enough

How you can practice democracy (even as a child)

  1. Have class elections for class leader and other roles.
  2. Listen to everyone's ideas and vote on class rules.
  3. Join or start a school club where members make decisions together.
  4. Respect others when they speak, even if you disagree.

Why democracy is important

Democracy helps people live peacefully. It gives people a chance to choose leaders, keeps leaders responsible, and protects our rights. In a good democracy, everyone is safe and can share ideas.

A simple class activity: Mini election

Steps:

  • Choose 2–3 classmates who want to be class leader.
  • Each candidate tells the class one promise they will keep.
  • Make a ballot paper and let each child vote secretly.
  • Count the votes and announce the winner.
  • Talk about why the process was fair or if it can be improved.
