Melody β€” Creating / Composing (Music)

For learners age 10 (Kenya). Short, friendly notes and activities to help you make simple melodies for songs, school assemblies or fun.

What is a melody? 🎡

A melody is a tune you can hum or sing. It is a series of notes played one after another that sounds like a musical sentence. A good melody is easy to remember.

Simple words to know
  • Phrase β€” a short musical sentence (like a line in a poem).
  • Motif β€” a small idea (2–4 notes) you can repeat.
  • Scale β€” a group of notes (example: C D E F G A B).
  • Interval β€” the distance between two notes (step = near, leap = far).
How to make a simple melody β€” 4 easy steps
  1. Choose a scale: try C major (C D E F G A B). In Kenya many school songs use simple scales.
  2. Pick a short motif of 2–4 notes. Repeat it later so people remember it.
  3. Use steps (move to next note) more than big leaps. Steps sound smooth.
  4. Make a phrase: Start, go up or down, then finish on a strong note (like C or G).
Example (singable)

Solfa: Do Re Mi So | Mi Re Do
Letters: C D E G | E D C

Try singing: Doβ€”Reβ€”Miβ€”So, Miβ€”Reβ€”Do. This makes a short, happy phrase you can use for a school chorus.

Sing while pointing to each note: C β†’ D β†’ E β†’ G β†’ E β†’ D β†’ C.

Tips & Kenyan ideas
  • Use call-and-response like many Kenyan songs: leader sings a phrase, class answers with the same phrase.
  • Use nature and local words (e.g., "safari", "maua", "kilele", "mkazi") to make lyrics easy and fun.
  • Try composing a school jingle using a repeating motif so everyone remembers it quickly.
Short activities (10–15 minutes)
  1. Clap & sing: Clap the rhythm while singing Do–Re–Mi–So. Move hands up when pitch goes up.
  2. Make a 4-note melody: pick notes from C D E F G. Write them as letters (example: C E D G).
  3. Group game: One child sings a motif, others repeat and add one note. Keep building the melody!
Compose your own β€” quick template

Fill in the spaces and then sing it:

End (1–2 notes β€” finish on C or G): _____ _____

Example filled: Start: C E / Middle: D G E / End: C

Final note

Play, sing, and repeat. Great melodies are often simple and easy to sing. Try composing a melody for your class anthem or a short song about Kenya β€” remember to have fun!

🎢 Happy composing!
