Performing β Kenyan Folk Dances
What are folk dances? π€
Folk dances are traditional dances that people in communities do at celebrations, ceremonies and when they want to tell a story. In Kenya, different communities have their own dances. These dances use music, special clothes and steps that have been learned for many years.
Famous Kenyan folk dances (easy list)
- Maasai jumping dance (Adumu) β strong jumps and loud singing. π¦
- Isukuti (Luhya) β fast drum beats and lively group dancing. π₯
- Ohangla (Luo) β upbeat music with drums and the nyatiti (string instrument). πΈ
- Chakacha (Coastal / Swahili) β flowing hip movements and coastal rhythms. π
What you will see in these dances

Simple steps to try (safe and fun)
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend knees slightly.
- Clap 2 times to the beat: clap-clap. ππ
- Stomp once with your right foot, then left foot: stomp-stomp. π£
- Jump up gently once (like a Maasai jump) β keep knees soft. π¦
- Turn slowly to your right and bow slightly. Repeat as a small circle with friends.
Activity idea (Classroom or Club):
Make a drum or use a plastic container as a drum. Put a short rhythm (clap-clap, stomp) and have everyone copy the beat. Then add one dance move each time someone learns it.
Respect and safety
- Ask permission before copying a dance from a community β these dances are part of culture and history.
- Wear safe shoes and dance on a flat surface to avoid slips.
- Start slowly and do gentle jumps β warm up your legs first.
Short quiz (try answering!)
