Creative Arts — Drawing and Decoration

Subtopic: Paint and Colour (Ages 6) 🎨

Paint (rangi) is a colourful liquid we use to make pictures and decorate things. Today we learn simple colours, how to mix them and fun painting ideas you can do at home or school.

Things you need (Vitu unavyohitaji):
  • Water-based paint (rangi za maji) — safe for kids
  • Brushes (brashi), old cloth, or your fingers (kidole)
  • Paper, cardboard or old plate to paint on
  • A cup of water and a cloth to clean hands
  • Newspaper or mat to cover the floor
Primary colours (Rangi za msingi):
Red (nyekundu)   Blue (bluu)   Yellow (manjano)
Mixing colours — fun tests (Changanya rangi):
+ =   Red + Yellow = Orange (machungwa)
+ =   Yellow + Blue = Green (kijani)
+ =   Red + Blue = Purple (zambarau)
Tip: Start with small drops of each colour to find the shade you like. (Anza kwa matone madogo.)
Easy painting activities (Vitendo rahisi):
  1. Finger painting: Use your fingers to make dots, lines and swirls on paper.
  2. Stamp painting: Use a bottle cap, leaf or sponge as a stamp. Dip in paint and press on paper.
  3. Paint a house: Draw a square and triangle, then paint walls, roof and garden. Try Kenyan colours — green trees, blue sky.
  4. Decorate a rock: Paint small rocks with bright colours and patterns. Place them in the garden.
Step-by-step: Paint a simple flower (Picha ya ua):
1. Draw a small circle — this is the middle of the flower (kipengele cha katikati).
2. Draw 5 big petals around the circle.
3. Paint the middle yellow and the petals any colour you like.
4. Paint a green stem and two leaves.
Try mixing red and yellow to make orange for petals!
Safety and clean up (Usalama na kusafisha):
  • Use water-based paints only. Ask an adult before using any paint.
  • Wear old clothes or an apron. Cover the floor with newspaper.
  • Wash hands with soap after painting.
  • Keep paints away from mouth and eyes. If paint gets in eyes, tell an adult.
Show your art! (Onyesha sanaa yako)

Ask your teacher or parent to take a photo of your painting. Share it in class or stick it on the wall at home.

Have fun painting! Karibu rangi, karibu ubunifu!
