Environment & its Resources
Subtopic: Weather and the Sky
For children aged 6 (Kenya):
- Learn about the sun, clouds, rain, wind, moon and stars.
- See how weather changes and how it affects us in Kenya.
What is the sky?
The sky is the space above us. In the day it is mostly blue. At night it is dark with the moon and stars.
What is weather?
Weather is what the sky does now — sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, hot or cool.

Weather in Kenya (simple):
Kenya has rains that help our farms and trees. There are two main rainy times:
- Long rains: March, April, May (many places get lots of rain).
- Short rains: October, November, December (some rain again).
Near the coast it is usually warm. In the high places (like Nanyuki, Nyeri), it can be cool.
Good words to know:
Sun
Cloud
Rain
Wind
Moon
Rainbow
Short activities (fun & easy):
- Look outside for one minute. Draw what you see of the sky. (Sun? Clouds? Rain?) ✏️
- Weather walk: Walk with a parent and feel if it is warm or cool. Say one sentence: "Today is ______."
- Cloud count: Count how many clouds you see. Small game — who sees more clouds?
- Make a weather chart: Draw 7 boxes for the week and draw a sun, cloud or rain each day.
Safety tips (easy):
- If it is rainy, wear a raincoat or use an umbrella. ☔
- If the sun is very hot, wear a hat and drink water. 🧢💧
- If it is windy, hold an adult’s hand near the road. 💨
Questions for the teacher or parent:
- What is the weather today? Ask the child to draw it.
- When does Kenya have the long rains? (March–May)
- What do we wear when it rains? What do we wear when it is hot?
Short poem to remember
The sun says "Good morning!" ☀️
The clouds say "Maybe rain." ☁️🌧️
The wind says "I will play." 💨
At night the moon says "Good night!" 🌙✨
